    City of Vernon, California


    Annual Salary: $189,584 - $230,441 DOE/DOQ

    The City of Vernon is a dynamic full-service city of 5.2 square miles located about five miles to the southeast of downtown Los Angeles. Founded in 1905 as the first exclusively industrial city in the Southwestern United States, Vernon is home to 250 residents and has embarked on ambitious plans to increase its residential population and establish itself as an ideal place to live and work. The City currently houses more than 1,800 businesses that employ approximately 50,000 people, serving as a vital economic engine for the Southern California region.

    The City Clerk plans, directs, supervises, and coordinates all activities of the City Clerk’s Office related to Council meetings, City elections, and public records in accordance with applicable laws, codes, policies, and procedures. The City Clerk oversees two full-time staff members: the Deputy City Clerk and Clerk Specialist. This position maintains the City Municipal Code, certifies City documents, and attests to proper execution of all public documents. The City is seeking a detail oriented, thorough, and responsive candidate to serve as the next City Clerk. The ideal candidate is politically astute with excellent customer service. A team player who is approachable and engaged will do well in this role.

    Qualified candidates possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Public or Business Administration, or closely related field; along with five (5) years of responsible experience involving the administration of a City Clerk or similar municipality office, including at least three (3) years of supervisory experience. A valid California State Driver’s License is required along with a Notary Public license. A Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) Certificate is desirable.

    The annual salary range for the City Clerk is $189,584 - $230,441 ; placement within this range is dependent on qualifications and experience.

    The City of Vernon offers an annual salary of $189,584 - $230,441 DOE/DOQ and a comprehensive benefit package including vacation, holiday, and sick leave as well as medical, dental vision, life, and long-term disability insurance.

    The City has a 4/10 work schedule and there is an option for participation in a Hybrid Work Program that provides both onsite and remote work opportunities.

    The City also has morning City Council and Commission meetings.

    The City of Vernon offers a comprehensive benefit package including vacation, holiday, and sick leave as well as medical, dental vision, life, and long term disability insurance.

    Retirement Benefit : Retirement benefits are provided by the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS):

    Effective January 1, 2013, newly hired non-safety employees who are new CalPERS members, as defined by the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 ("PEPRA"), will be enrolled in the CalPERS 2% at 62 benefit formula. New members will be required to pay 7% as their member contribution.

    An employee who is a "classic" member of CalPERS, will be enrolled in the CalPERS 2.7% at 55 benefit formula. Classic employees urrently pay an 8% employee contribution and a 3% share of the employer contribution.

    Cafeteria Benefits Plan : The City offers a monthly allowance towards the purchase of a HMO, PPO or HSA medical plan for the employee and their family members. Any remaining amount can be used towards the purchase of a HMO or PPO Dental planand Vision coverage for dependents. Vision coverage is included at no cost to the employee. Supplemental Insurance plans are available.

    Holiday pay : The City has 13 authorized holidays per calendar year.

    Vacation - Executive and Management Staff:
    Continuous Years of Service Vacation Hours Earned Bi-Weekly Accrual
    1st year thru 4th year 120hrs; 4.62 accrual rate
    5th year thru 10th year 150hrs; 5.77 accrual rate
    10th year thru 15th year 170hrs; 6.54 accrual rate
    15th year thru 25th year 185hrs; 7.12 accrual rate
    25th year and more 190hrs; 7.31 accrual rate
    City offers vacation cash out.

    Sick Leave : All full-time employees shall accrue up to 80 hours of sick leave per calendar year, at a rate of 3.08 hours per pay period.

    Administrative Leave : Executive and Management receives 80 hours per calendar year. First year receives administrative leave on a pro-rated rate depending on hire date.

    Tuition Reimbursement : $2,200.00 is available to those who satisfactorily complete job related college courses.

    Hybrid Work Program: The City offers a hybrid work schedule for elgible positions. The City allows a combination/flexible work schedule upto 50% remote work.

    Other Benefits : Most employees work a 4/10 schedule. In addition, the City offers paid parental leave, bereavement leave and jury duty.

    Miscellaneous Benefits : The City provides an interest-free loan program for the purchase of a computer, corrective eye surgery and a hearing aide device.
