    The Position

    Public Service Interns receive training and complete a variety of assignments in staff activities directly relating to their major course of study while enrolled in an educational institution.

    Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation.

    This posting is for a rotary intern position with the Compliance Branch and Chemical Accident Prevention Program (CAPP) in the Bureau of Air Pollution Control. The Compliance team of engineers and scientists inspect facilities with a potential impact to air quality, review the reports and records of those facilities, and use best scientific and engineering judgement to make decisions. The duties of the position within Compliance include reviewing technical reports and stack testing data from facilities, assisting Compliance Staff, including Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers, with inspections of facility records, taking notes during meetings and communicating that information to Compliance Staff, drafting compliance orders to amend permit requirements, and assisting the Compliance Supervisors with projects. The CAPP team of engineers inspects and permits chemical processes subject to Nevada's Regulation of Highly Hazardous Substances and Explosives. The duties of the position within CAPP include working directly with Chemical, Mechanical, and Metallurgical Engineers to assess chemical plant designs, process hazards, operational and mechanical procedures, and emergency action plans. The minimum number of hours required for this position is 20 hours a week during allowable working hours, but can work full-time during school breaks.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Graduation from high school or the equivalent and enrollment and continued successful performance in an academic program related to the field of employment at an accredited college or university. Special Notes Employment is not to exceed six months from the date of graduation. Employment in this class will not lead to permanent status in State service. Special Requirements A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and hike over uneven terrain. Must be able to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.     The presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.

On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.

    Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
