    Position Description

    Tacoma Power's Transmission & Distribution section is seeking to fill a Journeyman Lineman position. Linemen perform skilled journey-level work involving the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical overhead and underground distribution and transmission systems. A high degree of skill and safety consciousness is required. The work is dangerous and frequently performed on energized high voltage lines and/or under unfavorable weather conditions. Work is normally performed under supervision; however, on occasion, employees may work on special assignments without supervision and may supervise skilled and unskilled workers of other classifications.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Requirements:
    • Graduation from high school or equivalent
    • Hold a current journey-level line electrician card
    Licenses, Certificates and Other Requirements:
    Valid Washington State Commercial Driver's License, Class A required at time of application.
    Must obtain tanker endorsement prior to completion of probation with maintenance thereafter.
    Valid first aid, CPR, and flagging card must be obtained prior to completion of probation with maintenance thereafter.

    Knowledge & Skills

    • Methods, equipment and materials used in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical overhead and underground lines, cables and equipment
    • Principles of electrical theory and application to electrical overhead and underground circuits and system
    • Occupational hazards and safety precautions and materials
    • Clearing and tagging procedures, trench shoring and excavation
    • Rigging methods and hoisting procedures
    • Understand the requirements and proper use of personal protective equipment
    • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
    • Understand and follow oral and written directions
    • Lift heavy objects in awkward and confined spaces, using proper lifting and rigging techniques
    • Climb power poles, towers and other structures
    • Operate equipment including, but not limited to bucket, lift and line trucks and wirepullers
    • Exercise proper work practices and adhere to safety work rules
    • Exercise proper safety handling rules for hazardous or toxic substances
    • Perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions
    • Maintain harmonious work relationships
    • Read and interpret circuit diagrams, system maps and underground lay-outs

    Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
    • Position requires lifting, climbing, hoisting and pulling
    • Outdoor environment; subject to adverse weather conditions and work in close proximity to and handling of high voltage, energized lines or cables and traffic
    • Position requires work in trenches and below ground vaults or on power poles, towers or from aerial equipment
    • Incumbents may also be exposed to hazardous substances and conditions
    • Subject to call-out and overtime during power outages and or other emergencies

    Appointment is subject to passing a background check and a pre-employment medical examination that will include a drug and alcohol screening . This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between The City of Tacoma and Local 483. New employees must successfully complete a nine-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.

    Other Employment Information

    Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

    Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

    Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
