    Description

    *This application is for a reclassification of an existing position, open only to designated, internal candidates invited to participate in this examination process.*

    The person in this position is responsible for performing a variety of complex and difficult skilled trade and maintenance functions related to the City's wastewater mechanical systems, pumping, electrical and process systems. This involves working with related equipment at both centralized and remote wastewater facilities and pumping/lift stations.

    The ideal candidate operates a variety of hand, power and shop tools as well as utility trucks and cranes. They will coordinate and oversee various lift station maintenance activities and perform a variety of technical tasks of varying complexity and difficulty relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

    Examples of Essential Functions

    • Lead in the diagnosing, testing, repairing, modification, disassembly, rebuilding, installation and troubleshooting of a variety of wastewater equipment, including but not limited to: industrial engines, blowers, and pipe pumps and pump room equipment; lift stations; gates; valves check valves, mixers; odor control equipment; wet wells and dry pits; electrical systems; hydraulic systems and other mechanical systems.
    • Perform a variety of complex and difficult skilled trade and maintenance functions including plumbing and electrical maintenance.
    • Perform routine, complex, and/or difficult preventive and predictive maintenance, including but not limited to inspecting, cleaning, lubricating, and adjusting, equipment, while keeping equipment in optimal working condition to minimize unexpected problems and downtime; receive requests for maintenance and repair from City staff.
    • Inspect city lift stations for needed repairs or maintenance including but not limited to: pump repairs, pipe and valve maintenance and repair, SCADA software and hardware, and vandalism.
    • Install new electrical circuits; repair or replace broken switches, outlets, ballasts, circuit breakers, relays, switches and thermostats.
    • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain all mechanical components and machinery including plumbing, electrical systems, compressors, pumps, filtration systems, and auxiliary generating systems; repair or replace pumps, motors, belts and fan bearings necessary for proper operation.
    • Fabricate, construct, install and retrofit various devices including handrails, service trucks, pressure washers, trucks and trailers; bolt, rivet, weld and screw parts to assemble structural and functional components.
    • Perform routine, emergency, complex, and/or difficult repairs and preventive maintenance on sewer lift stations; change or repair filters, sump pumps, dehumidifiers, vent fans, lighting buffers, various level monitoring equipment, fences, ceramic seals, valves, motors and electrical and plumbing systems.
    • Maintain telemetry system including antennae, electrical conduit, remote transmitter units, power box, dry contracts and switching boxes; maintain air monitoring meters for confined space entry activities.
    • Perform various plumbing and pipe fitting duties; repair leaky pipes and lines; replace faulty valves, control devices and filters.
    • Oversee assigned projects including planning, scheduling, and/or directing work.
    • Operate a variety of machinery and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of assigned facilities including, but not limited to, forklift, cranes, snow plow and gas and electrical welding equipment.
    • Read and interpret a variety of blue prints, schematics, plans and specifications; ensure work duties adhere to established policies and procedures.
    • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
    • Estimate time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required.
    • Perform confined space entries per local, state, and federal regulations.
    • Provide on-the-job training as required.
    • Instruct crew members on the safe use of tools, equipment, and materials as required.
    • Perform the same duties as the work being led.
    • Perform related duties as required.


    Minimum Qualifications

    The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application.
    Combinations of relevant work experience and education that are equivalent to the following are acceptable.

    Education/Training:
    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Specialized training in wastewater maintenance or a related field.

    Experience :
    • Five years of increasingly responsible lift station/water/wastewater maintenance experience.


    License/Certificate :
    • Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.
    • Crane Operator Certification

    Note: Possession of an EPA certificate may be required by some positions.

    Examination Process:
    Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and pass the examination for this position to be eligible for hire. The examination will consist of a Training and Experience evaluation (T&E) weighted at 100%.

    Training and Experience Evaluation (T&E) Details: The T&E examination consists of a Supplemental Questionnaire. The questions may be viewed online under the tab marked "QUESTIONS" on the job announcement page. The T&E must be submitted online at the time of application.
    • Responses to your T&E questions should be consistent with the information given in your application details. Answers are subject to verification.
    • Failure to complete all of the questions or incomplete responses will result in a lower score; therefore, it is advantageous for you to provide a full and complete response to each supplemental question.

    Employee/Veteran Preference in the Event of Tie Scores:
    On promotional examinations (Rule VIII, Section 9), in the event of tie scores resulting from final rating, including seniority points, a classified employee will be awarded veteran's preference and provided a rank preference if one (1) of the eligibles has submitted proof of honorable discharge from the military service. This preference will only be administered in the event of tie scores. Documentation must be submitted at the time of application.

    Seniority Points:
    Classified employees of the City of Reno shall receive seniority credit computed by adding to a passing score as follows: The final ranking will include the applicable seniority points added to the overall grade of the examination process. For each full year of continuous service completed, 0.2 points will be added up to a maximum of ten (10) years... 2 points will be the maximum. Rule VIII - Promotion, Section 9. Seniority Credit.

    Appointment and Certification:
    Appointments to positions in the City's Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.
