About the Office of General CounselThe Office of General Counsel (OGC) employs in-house attorneys and legal non-attorney staff for the State Bar at its Los Angeles and San Francisco offices. OGC provides a full range of legal services, including representation of the State Bar in state and federal courts and administrative agencies; advocacy in the California Supreme Court with respect to State Bar discipline matters and admission cases; and legal advice to the State Bar's Board of Trustees, offices, sub-entities, and programmatic clients.
OGC provides legal advice and representation in the following areas: admissions and certain discipline matters, antitrust, Bagley-Keene Open Meeting Act, bankruptcy, California Public Records Act, collections, contracts, copyright, governance, labor and employment, legislation, regulations and rules, real estate, regulatory work, debt collection, insurance, intellectual property, general corporate matters, and public agency compliance. OGC also handles Complaint Review Unit requests.
The Ideal CandidateThe ideal intern will have experience with or a strong interest in law and advocacy and be a self-starter. In addition, the ideal candidate will have the following characteristics:
- Currently enrolled in a 4-year college or university pursuing a bachelor's or graduate degree, with a strong preference for candidates currently enrolled in law school
- Proven ability to quickly grasp new tools and technology
- Excellent work ethic
- Clear and concise oral and written communication skills and attention to detail
- Commitment to the State Bar's values of clarity, excellence, respect, and a growth mindset
- Interested in learning about and working in the public sector
- Ability to work ten weeks full-time from late May or early June through early to mid-August 2025
- Must reside in California and be able to go into the Los Angeles or San Francisco office at least once a week
Letter of Interest (Required)In addition to completing the State Bar application, include a letter of interest providing information about why you are interested in the role, and highlighting the knowledge, skills and abilities that you bring to the role. The letter of interest should be limited to one page.

DefinitionUnder the general supervision of OGC management and/or attorneys, interns perform a variety of assignments based on the needs of the office. Assignment areas may include conducting research, assistance with litigation tasks, drafting written reports and summaries, drafting correspondence, proofreading documents, and other tasks as assigned.
Examples of Essential DutiesThe Summer 2025 Legal Assistant Intern will work under the supervision of OGC management and/or attorneys and staff on various legal matters which will include the following:
- Assistance with drafting legal briefs
- Assistance with review of contracts
- Assistance with review of attorney discipline complaints as part of OGC's Complaint Review Unit function
- Reviewing and analyzing legal files
- Reviewing and organizing evidence and exhibits
- Factual research
- Legal research
- Attending State Bar Board of Trustees and other meetings
- Drafting summaries of evidence and testimony
- Proofreading legal documents
- Drafting correspondence
- Other general legal work appropriate for the intern's level of knowledge
