    Maintenance Worker I - Parks


    The City of Concord is currently seeking to fill one Maintenance Worker I vacancy in the Parks Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department.

    What you will be doing:
    Parks Maintenance Workers play an integral role in the beautification of the City of Concord by providing safe, aesthetically pleasing parks designed and maintained to meet the diverse needs for active and passive recreation and leisure activities. They also maintain streetscapes, including street trees and traffic medians, open space areas, and public right-of-ways, in an aesthetically pleasing condition; and achieve mandated requirements for public safety in the most cost effective and efficient manner.

    The Public Works Department:
    The Public Works Department strives to develop and provide a variety of customer driven maintenance services and programs to protect the City’s investment of infrastructure, public facilities, and equipment; and ensure the health and safety of Concord’s community in the most efficient and cost-effective manner. The Department is comprised of 89 full time staff across multiple divisions: Administration, Facilities Maintenance, Infrastructure Maintenance, and Parks Services, and Transportation. The Parks Division provides safe, aesthetically pleasing parks designed and maintained to meet the diverse needs for active and passive recreation and leisure activities.

    SELECTION PROCESS
    1. Submit a completed City of Concord application and the required supplemental question responses online at www.cityofconcord.org by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, January 19. Only application materials submitted online during the filing period will be accepted.

    2. All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, and those candidates demonstrating the strongest qualifications for the position will be asked to provide a current California DMV History Report.

    3. Candidates with a clean DMV history will be invited to participate in the examination process. If you are invited and are unavailable, we regret that we will not be able to reschedule you.

    4. Candidates that pass the examination process will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancy, as well as others occurring over the next 12 months.

    Driving History:
    This position requires a current California DMV history report dated within 3 months of the closing date of this recruitment. Candidates must have a clean driving record for the previous seven year period. To obtain your DMV history report you may visit any DMV location or you may submit a request online at https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/customer-service/request-vehicle-or-driver-records/online-driver-record-request/ . You can submit the DMV history report by attaching it to your application or emailing it to sara.castro@cityofconcord.org .

    Conviction History:
    If you receive a conditional job offer, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you have received a conditional job offer.     Parks Maintenance
    Operates, services, cleans and cares for tools and equipment used on the job, including grounds maintenance equipment, including a backhoe and tractor attachments, and a variety of hand and power tools; operates an aerial pruning platform, brush chipper, chain saw, stump grinder, leaf blower and pole saw.Plants, cultivates, waters and fertilizes trees, shrubs and flowers’ waters, mows, weeds, trims aerates and fertilizes lawns; sprays or applies fungicides, herbicides, insecticides and fertilizers; prunes and trims designated street trees to shape and improve growth; maintains lawns, trees, shrubs, ground cover, picnic tables, benches and sprinkler systems.Maintains and picks up litter from medians, pedways and backup lots; maintains and makes minor repairs to playground/picnic equipment and playground/picnic areas, athletic fields and playing courts; cleans and clears park grounds, structures and playing fields of debris and hazardous conditions.Responds to emergency or complaint calls regarding conditions at parks or landscaped areasRepairs and installs sprinkler systems; maintains, repairs and renovates irrigation system controllers, valves, pipes and components.Performs general painting, plumbing and carpentry; digs ditches and trenches; performs a variety of physical labor as assigned.Follows safe work practices and observes safety precautions; may be responsible for vehicle and pedestrian traffic safety in work area.


    For Most Positions
    Operates, services, cleans and cares for tools and equipment used on the job.Responds to emergency or complaint calls regarding sewer, drainage, road conditions, building security including hazardous or other spills, traffic signals, or conditions at parks or landscaped areas. Ensures that appropriate parties are notified.Follows safe work practices and observes safety precautions, including shoring techniques; and sets up traffic cones and barricades to channel traffic.Performs a variety of physical labor as assigned.Reads and interprets maps and basic blueprints.Maintains records including initiating and completing work orders, and makes oral reports of work performed.Orders and picks up material following standard procedures.For relief or training purposes, may be assigned maintenance activities of personnel in higher-level classifications.Promotes the City's Mission to make Concord a city of the highest quality by providing responsive, cost-effective, and innovative government services; understands and subscribes to the Vision and Values Statement adopted by the City.Performs other work as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Knowledge and Abilities

    Knowledge of the methods, tools, equipment, materials, and practices used in the construction and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, sewers, traffic signs and markings, traffic signals, or municipal facilities; of the potential hazards and necessary safety precautions associated with the work. Ability to perform physical work requiring coordination, agility, strength, and stamina; to obtain appropriate certificates or licenses required to operate and service equipment; to learn to operate a variety of hand and portable power tools, vehicles, and mobile construction and maintenance equipment skillfully and safely; to follow oral and written instructions; to read and interpret maps, diagrams, and equipment operations manuals; to maintain records; to make basic arithmetical calculations; and to establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

    Education: Satisfactory completion of high school or the equivalent.

    Experience: One year of experience in field construction or maintenance work. Related vocational training in construction technology may substitute for six months of experience.

    Other

    A Class C California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment. Selected positions require that incumbents obtain a Class B California Driver's License within the six-month probation period.
