POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATIONRecreation Specialist - Sports is a professional-level recreation position responsible for organizing, supervising, developing, and promoting activities in a specific recreation/leisure area. These areas may include special events, arts and crafts, adult activities, youth activities, sports, community fitness programs, senior citizen activities, and pre-school activities.
The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on the qualifications and experience of each candidate. The City of Westminster has a Multilingual Stipend Program to encourage and reward benefited employees who are conversationally fluent in languages other than English. Benefited employees can test their language proficiency skills and qualify for a bi-weekly stipend that will vary based on the employee’s level of proficiency and usage.

JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks 1. Organizes, supervises, promotes, evaluates, coordinates, and develops program activities in a specific recreation/leisure area
2. Trains, supervises and coordinates the work of part-time, temporary, contractual, and volunteer personnel
3. Travels to visit various facilities when and where program activities occur on an as-needed or emergency basis, using a personal or City vehicle
4. Promotes various recreation programs using multiple methods, including activity guides, web pages, community awareness, and marketing plans
5. Maintains regular and punctual attendance
Other Duties and Responsibilities 1. Evaluates recreation activities and program staff for job performance, effectiveness, community needs, and quality of programs
2. Maintains records and statistics and completes reports such as staffing, attendance, performance, effectiveness, etc., as assigned
3. Maintains discipline in recreation areas and facilities
4. Maintains budget, including all accounting and purchasing records
5. Obtains funding levels through sponsorships, grants, and/or fundraising events to help offset the current event expenses
6. Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City's discretion.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS/PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications Required :- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in recreation, physical education, or closely related field
- A valid Colorado Driver's License and safe driving record throughout employment
- CPR and Standard First Aid Certificate within ninety (90) days of employment
Preferred :- A minimum of one (1) year experience in recreation facility, supervision, or recreation program planning and supervision
- Knowledge of automated recreation software programs such as RecTrac and Teamsideline is desirable
- Knowledge of multiple sports rules, including softball, soccer, pickleball, volleyball, and basketball
Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.
Physical Requirements Work requires sufficient physical stamina and strength to:
- Frequently sit, stand, and walk through a multilevel high-use public facility; may run to address an emergency situation
- Occasionally squat, bend, kneel, twist, and crawl to perform daily inspection of recreation facility; occasionally climb, balance, and reach overhead and below shoulders to assist staff in performing regular maintenance and inspection at elevated heights on ladders and Genie lifts
- Occasional light and firm grasp to use hand tools and other equipment; frequent fine manipulation to perform minor repairs on recreational equipment
- Frequent near acuity to perform office tasks and projects; occasional far acuity to observe activity in the facility for safety hazards or problems; constant hearing to interact with guests and staff and recognize trouble outside of view
- Occasional lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds to assist in the set-up of table and chairs; occasional carrying of up to fifty (50) pounds up to 100 feet to stock supplies, equipment, and roll out gym floor covers; occasional pushing and/or pulling of up to fifty (50) pounds to assist in moving equipment and supplies around the facility for set up
WORKING CONDITIONS Work is constantly performed indoors, with occasional outdoor activity to supervise scheduled recreational activities and events. Indoor and outdoor work is performed in a multilevel recreation facility with high public use, where loud noise and multiple events and activities at one time may cause a distraction.
Required Materials and Equipment Personal computers, typewriters, calculators, telephones, PA systems, copy machines, credit card terminals, cell phones, and other standard office equipment; gym floor covers; hand tools; AED; recreational equipment; general fitness equipment; gloves; and pocket masks.

The City of Westminster does not participate in the Social Security system. In lieu of Social Security contributions, the city contributes to a 401(a) defined contribution plan on your behalf.
401(a) Contribution Rates:Employee Mandatory Contribution: 11.5% of your base pay. Contributions are pre-tax and fully vested.
Employer Contribution: 12% of your base pay.
