    The Position

    Under general supervision, Therapeutic Recreation Specialists perform initial and periodic assessments, treatment planning, and therapeutic services to assist individuals in correctional institutions, rehabilitation programs, long-term care facilities, residential facilities, mental health facilities and facilities for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities to improve their mental and physical health and/or social functioning.

    Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.

    The Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) is recruiting for a full-time Therapeutic Recreation Specialist 2 at Desert Willow Treatment Center (DWTC) located in Las Vegas, Nevada. DWTC is an inpatient psychiatric hospital that provides mental health treatment for children ages 12 to 17. Therapeutic Recreation Specialists will research recreational therapy and activity programs and assist in developing recreation and leisure activity resources as applicable to the client population. They will prepare and monitor the recreation budget to provide for projected needs and anticipated expenditure for each fiscal year. The incumbent will assist individuals in pursuing enjoyable and healthy leisure activities of their choice in the least restrictive environment possible, as applicable to the population served.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in therapeutic recreation, recreation, or specialty area such as art, dance, music or physical education and one year of professional experience coordinating and providing recreation therapy in a clinical, residential, community-based and/or correctional environment; OR certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) and one year of experience described above; OR one year of experience as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements Certification through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation as required by the agency for accreditation by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Hospitals or other accrediting body is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
