    Position Description

    The City of Tacoma and Tacoma Public Utilities are establishing an Engineering Technician II eligible list that will be good for one year. This recruitment will be used to fill any upcoming vacancies in Tacoma Public Utilities' Power and Water divisions and the City of Tacoma's Public Works, Environmental Services and Information Technology departments. Tacoma Power's Transmission and Distribution division has a current vacancy.

    Engineering Technician II's perform moderate to advanced drafting, GIS (Mapping), and other sub-professional engineering duties in office and field environments. Daily work assignments may be provided by an Engineer or an Engineering Technician III or IV lead; however, some duties may require working independently on routine and non-repetitive assignments.

    Primary Responsibilities include:
    • Draft Construction drawings for civil, electrical, or mechanical drawings using Computer-aided drafting (CAD) and GIS programs such as AutoCAD and/or Esri.
    • Incorporate redline mark ups into final as-built drawings and route to engineers for approval.
    • Maintain GIS data integrity.
    • Provide quality-check and oversight on as-built drawings as provided by engineers.
    • Manage CAD files using management software such as Autodesk Vault.
    • Travel to remote sites as needed to verify accuracy of drawings.
    Other Responsibilities may include:
    • 3D Modeling using software such as SolidWorks, Revit, or AutoCAD 3D.
    • Electronically record data on sectional maps.
    • Prepare engineering drawings; reduce engineering data and computations of estimate and quantities.
    • Participate in various field studies; analyze information and prepare reports of findings.
    • Perform on-site work verification for conformity to specifications of materials and installations.
    • Perform mathematical computations from field notes, tabulate statistics, and draw graphs and charts showing trends and comparisons.
    • Provide public information concerning services, research property information, and issue permits.


    Qualifications

    • Graduation from high school or equivalent AND
    • Two years’ experience in sub-professional engineering related work AND
    • Either the completion of a recognized engineering technology vocational education program which includes computer-aided drafting training OR
    • One-year relevant college-level engineering course work (two-years of experience are equivalent to one year of education.)
    LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    • Valid Washington State Driver's license at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter
    • Personal Protective Equipment and Safety Certificate may be required with maintenance thereafter

    • Basic engineering mathematics applied to surveying and engineering computations
    • Practices, techniques and instruments used in engineering drafting and mapping
    • Construction specifications, plans, and regulations related to construction contracts
    • Elementary engineering practices
    • Record-keeping techniques
    • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
    • Read, interpret, apply and explain federal, state, county and City laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures
    • Technical aspects of field of specialty
    • Basic research methods
    • Perform moderately difficult technical engineering drafting duties, computations, calculate estimates, and compile engineering data and statistics
    • Read and comprehend complex plans and specifications
    • Use computer-aided design, drafting and mapping equipment
    • Understand and follow oral and written directions
    • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
    • Maintain records and prepare reports
    • Work from blueprints, shop drawings and sketches
    • Meet schedules and timelines

    Appointment is subject to passing a background check. This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between The City of Tacoma and Local 17. New employees must successfully complete a nine-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.

    Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

    Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

    Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
