    DEFINITION
    Takes custody of inmate personal property and clothing held for safekeeping at a Sheriff's Department Custody facility.

    CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS
    Positions allocable to this class are assigned to a Sheriff's Department Custody facility and typically report to a Supervising Evidence and Property Custodian, Sheriff. These positions are responsible for ensuring that personal property and clothing held by the Sheriff's Department are protected from loss or damage and that the disposition of all property and clothing are maintained appropriately. Evidence and Property Custodian I, Sheriff positions require the knowledge and application of Departmental policies and guidelines and applicable laws and statutes governing the storage and safekeeping of personal property. These positions also require the exercise of basic computer data entry skills and a working knowledge of automated accountability and property tracking systems.

    Essential Job Functions

    Takes responsibility for personal property and clothing items held at a custody facility by receiving the personal property/items; upon release, inventorying personal property/items; listing, filing, and recording the location of the personal property/items; maintaining personal property records, including found property and property release forms; releasing personal property and clothing to an inmate client, relative, authorized representative, or federal or state prison, after appropriate verification of inmate release or transfer; ensuring that property is prepared for transfer to a county facility or the Central Property and Evidence Unit within the time allotted; purging inmate's personal property and clothing items stored at a custody facility; arranging for the transfer or disposal of unclaimed items in order to preserve the chain of custody.

    Responds to inquiries regarding the disposition of inmate property and clothing by answering phone calls, responding to emails, taking direct instructions from supervisor; retrieving the information from department’s filing system; retrieving the information from the storage locations; etc. in order to preserve the chain of custody.

    Completes data entry tasks by utilizing a computer tracking system indicating receipt, inventory, disposition in order to preserve the chain of custody of inmate’s property and clothing.

    Releases information relative to inmate personal property by answering calls, responding to emails, talking with verified individuals, etc.; gathering information; making appropriate documentation; etc. in order to preserve the chain of custody.

    Requirements

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
    Six months of experience, involving storekeeping, stock, property or warehouse inventory, and inventory maintenance.

    LICENSE
    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    PHYSICAL CLASS
    Physical Class III - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
    As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be utilized as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait three (3) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.

    CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

    MULTIPLE CHOICE AND/OR SIMULATION ASSESSMENTS ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

    TRANSFER OF TEST COMPONENTS
    • Applicants that have taken identical components recently for other exams may have their responses automatically transferred to this examination.
    • This examination contains test components that may be used in the future for new examinations and your test responses may be transferred.

    TESTING ACCOMMODATION

    VETERAN'S CREDIT
    If you served in the miliary and were honorably discharged, you may qualify for Veteran’s Credit. To receive this credit, please include a copy of your DD214 Form issued by the branch of service with your application for review.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
    The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months from the date of promulgation. Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION

    SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.

    ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY IF HIRED
    The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (Department) has a "zero tolerance" policy for its employees for the following:
    • use of narcotics, controlled substances, and/or prescription drugs without a prescription.
    Any employee found in violation of this policy will be subject to discharge.

    VACANCY INFORMATION
    The eligible register resulting from this examination will be used to fill vacancies in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Custody General & Specialized Division, Inmate Reception Center.

    AVAILABLE SHIFT Any Shift

    APPOINTEES MUST BE WILLING TO WORK ANY SHIFT, INCLUDING EVENINGS, NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, AND HOLIDAYS.

    WORK CONDITIONS
    The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) operates seven (7) days a week, 24-hours a day, and has locations throughout the greater Los Angeles County. Appointees MUST be willing to:
    • work in person (there are no remote work opportunities available for this position).
    • work in a 24 hour/7 day a week operating Custody Facility.
    • work the day shift (6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.).
    • work the afternoon shift (2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.).
    • work the early morning shift (10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.).
    • work holidays and weekends.
    • work at the Inmate Reception Center located at Twin Towers Correctional Facility.
    • work in a secure office environment in proximity with law enforcement personnel.
    • work in a Custody Facility where inmates are present.
