    Examples of Duties

    Please note the following:
    • This recruitment is being established on behalf of the Law Library and is not a Merced County position.
    • This is a full-time position (40 hours).
    • Position qualifies for MCERA retirement pension benefits.
    • Paid holidays provided.
    • Paid vacation and sick leave.

    Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Oversee and review the work of Public Services and Technical Services staff.

    • Develop and implement policies and procedures relating to Public and Technical services in collaboration with the Executive Director.

    • Provide vision and leadership in the development of public services, programs, and innovations to enhance the delivery of services and maximize library functions and efficiency.

    • Assign special projects to staff.

    • Assist and mentor Public Services librarians.

    • Provide information and guidance about law library policies and procedures for staff and patron.

    • Perform Public Services reference, research, circulation and other duties as needed.

    • Facilitate Public Services development of pathfinders, legislative histories and other user aids, tools and guides in multiple formats.

    • Coordinate interface between Technical Services and Public Services.

    • Provide direction, advice and oversight for the update and selection of new materials in all formats to maintain a comprehensive and current collection that meets the needs of users and conforms with budget resources.

    • Collaborate with the Executive Director on the Collection Development Policy.

    • Assist with collection space needs, plan and coordinate moves and shifts as needed.

    • Review, negotiate and approve database and print contracts.

    • Train and provide management, direction and guidance for specific assignments, projects, and programs for Public Services and Technical Services staff.

    • Monitor Public Services schedules, service points.

    • Facilitate instruction and training for new products and services.

    • Assist the Executive Director with staff performance evaluations, coaching, mentoring, and feedback.

    • Participate in recruitment, and hiring of staff.

    • Promote and supervise the development of instructional materials in legal research, including print, digital, web and video-based tutorials, and research guides.

    • Provide leadership and direction for Public Services in the development of seminars, educational programs, tours, classes, public service events, and programs.

    • Coordinate and take a leadership role in the outreach activities of the library.

    • Coordinate library marketing and outreach materials such as displays, exhibits, brochures, and other print, social and digital media.

    • Assist with webpage development.

    • Assist with library media communications, including articles, press kits, press releases.

    • Help resolve customer complaints, comments & questions.

    • Collaborate with Executive Director on library operations, policy, budget, personnel, strategic planning, program development, library goals, policies and other matters as requested.

    • Assist director with day-to-day supervision of the library.

    • Systems liaison: coordinate with IT consultants, department of technology, library systems and legal database vendors.

    • Preparation of various admin reports.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Experience
    Minimum 5 years professional law assistance experience, including at least 4 years advanced legal reference/research experience. Significant experience in law library administration, management, budgeting and finance. Substantial supervisory experience. Experienced in developing and implementing law library marketing and outreach materials, classes, seminars and programs.
    OR
    MLS or JD from an accredited library or law school

    Essential Functions

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Operate a personal computer and other office equipment.

    • Communicate effectively with others in person and over the telephone.

    • Analyze data, interpret policies, procedures and regulations, develop appropriate conclusions and prepare reports.

    • Resolve conflicts and respond appropriately to complaints.

    • Complete multiple priority projects with conflicting deadlines and under stressful conditions.

    • Prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping.

    • Frequently carry, lift, push, pull and manipulate large and small objects.

    • Frequent use of hand-eye coordination.

    • Must be able to lift up to thirty (30) pounds.

    • Regular attendance is an essential function.

    Knowledge of:
    • Knowledge of professional law librarianship concepts, principles and practices.

    • Familiarity with emerging technologies in legal research, library systems and law library trends.

    • Knowledge of the principles, concepts, and techniques of law library collection development.

    Ability to:
    • Demonstrated leadership abilities.

    • Strong service orientation; experience in public service, a plus.

    • Experience in a public law library, a plus.

    • Thorough proficiency in the use of legal databases.

    • Demonstrated experience creating and developing library aids, tools, and guides.

    • Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people.

    • Ability to initiate appropriate organizational change.

    • Able to prioritize, adapt to changing needs quickly and comfortably.

    • Strong interpersonal skills.

    • Ability to motivate and guide others, mentor, coach and counsel staff.

    • Ability to deal sensitively and effectively with confidential matters.

    • Excellent writing and communication skills.

    • Positive outlook, sense of humor.
