    Since 1972, the Missouri Division of Fire Safety / Office of the State Fire Marshal has been the State of Missouri’s premier regulatory oversight and enforcement agency for Fire Investigations, Fire Inspections, Elevator and Amusement Ride Safety, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety, and Firefighter Training and Certification. The Division provides services to over 25,000 firefighters in Missouri, as well as to the 6.1 million residents and over 40 million visitors to the state, each year.

Our mission is to provide proactive statutory enforcement, regulatory oversight, and education to protect all lives and property from the devastation of fires, explosions, and life safety perils.

    • Applicants must live in or be willing to move to Jackson County. If the applicant is outside of Jackson County, the application will be considered on a case-by-case basis and the location may be approved by the Division Director.
    • Conduct fire safety inspections in facilities under state oversight which require such inspection to maintain state licensing/certification requirements to include the Department of Health & Senior Services, Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Department of Mental Health, and Division of Family Services.
    • Fire safety inspections of Missouri’s fireworks industry, conduct public fire prevention and awareness presentations.
    • Represents the agency at meetings, conferences, and public education events, some of which require weekend and/or overnight travel.


    Qualifications

    • Graduate of an accredited four-year high school, or in lieu thereof, shall have obtained a certificate of equivalency from the State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
    • Minimum of three years’ experience as a firefighter or fire officer in a fire department, or three years of full-time, paid employment as an inspector in an insurance rating or adjusting bureau; or three years as an inspector in a fire service or fire prevention bureau of a municipal, military, governmental, or larger industrial plant, supplemented by at least one year of experience as a firefighter.
    • Certified as a Fire Inspector by the Missouri Division of Fire Safety or the successful completion of the Fire Inspector certification course within six (6) months from the date of employment.


    Additional Qualifications and Requirements

    • Additional documented hours of training in the fire inspection field, preferred.
    • Excellent public relations skills.
    • Must be able to independently plan, prioritize, and efficiently organize work.
    • Must be able to make sound decisions within established guidelines and procedures.
    • Shall be able to articulate findings both written and orally.
    • An Inspector shall not hold any other commission or office, elective or appointive, or accept any other employment while an Inspector unless approved by the State Fire Marshal.
    • An Inspector shall not accept any compensation, reward, or gift other than regular salary and expenses for the performance of official duties.
    • Shall have extensive computer knowledge.
    • Possess a valid Missouri driver’s license.
