    Overview

    The Coroner's Office is hiring a Medicolegal Death Investigator I (MLDI I).

    The MLDI I conducts investigations of all deaths and related procedures that fall under the jurisdiction of the Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner. They also conduct complete medicolegal death investigations, make death notifications to next of kin, present information to forensic pathologists, maintain a proper chain of custody with all evidence, prepare detailed reports, and comply with all ongoing educational and physical training requirements.

    Investigators work four (4) ten (10) hour shifts, covering 24-hours per day and 7-days per week. Shift teams are Sun-Wed, and Wed-Sat, with 3 investigators per team.

    What you'll be doing:
    • Responding to and investigating death scenes within Larimer County, conducting comprehensive medicolegal investigations.
    • Examining bodies under field conditions, identifying postmortem characteristics, signs of disease, and other distinguishing features.
    • Administering proper procedures for making death notifications to next of kin; provide compassionate assistance to families, the community, and law enforcement.
    • Reviewing medical records and conduct detailed interviews to gather relevant information.
    • Writing complete, accurate, and unbiased reports that meet professional standards.

    What we're looking for:
    • Experience in medicolegal death investigation or work in a Medical Examiner or Coroner's office.
    • Proficiency with case management software specific to coroners and medical examiners, with preference for experience using MDI Log.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Knowledge of Colorado Coroner's Statutes (30-10-601 through 30-10-618) and relevant Colorado Revised Statutes related to public records, evidence collection, and search warrants.
    • The ability to perform effectively under high stress and exercise mature judgment in crisis situations.


    Qualifications

    • One (1) year of experience or education in a related field, such as applicable medical occupations, law enforcement, criminal justice, qualified training from another Coroner Medical Examiner office, and/or medicolegal investigation, required.
    • High School Diploma or GED, required.
    • Associate's degree or above from an accredited college or university with major course work in health sciences, criminal justice, or another related field, preferred.
    • Documented training in Medical Terminology, required.
    • Must be 21 years of age or older required.
    • Certification through the Colorado Coroner's Association (CCA) as a Colorado Death Investigator, required within one (1) year of hire.
    • Basic approved course in Medicolegal Death Investigation, preferred.
    • Possession of a valid Driver's License by date of hire, required.
