The General Services Agency is currently recruiting for a Maintenance Engineer III. The ideal candidate is a dedicated and skilled trades professional with hands-on experience in maintenance, repair, and construction work, who will be well versed in a variety of trades, including HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. A strong commitment to workplace safety is critical to the success of this role.

THE POSITION

The Maintenance Engineer III is the lead worker and specialist in the series. This position supervises a crew of maintenance engineers in the performance of skilled and semi-skilled work involving the operation, maintenance, repair, remodel and minor construction of County buildings, structures and equipment. This classification is expected to perform with advanced technical proficiency in several of the following trades or to perform technical supervision over a specialized shop in one of the following trades: HVAC, electrical, plumbing, locksmith, and boiler operation and maintenance. This position creates scopes of work and manages small construction and remodel jobs within the County. Performs related duties as assigned.

Unless otherwise provided, this position is part of the Classified Service of the County and is assigned to the Craft/Maintenance/Institutional bargaining unit for labor and relations purposes.

Individuals who are in a full-time classification position are required to serve a twelve-month probationary period, which may be extended an additional six months, for a total of eighteen months.

Incumbents may also be subject to overtime, standby, callback, weekend, holiday and shift assignments as identified in their MOU (Memorandum of Understanding).

Typical Tasks

• Inspect buildings, structures, and equipment to ascertain need for repair and maintenance work;
• Oversee and perform both minor construction, alteration, maintenance and repair duties involving electrical, HVAC, plumbing and lock work;
• Construct, repair, restore and install structures such as floors, doors, walls, windows, stairways, furniture, cabinets, shelves and roofs;
• Operate and perform preventive maintenance on hand and power saws, planers, lathes, joiners, shapers, drills, sanders and a variety of hand tools;
• Estimate labor and material accurately for specific jobs;
• Train and oversee subordinate personnel;
• Maintain written and electronic records to include daily log readings, mechanical histories and preventive maintenance logs, and advise supervisor of boiler, machinery and equipment operation, maintenance and repair;
• Keep necessary records and prepare required reports, work orders, time sheets, and job estimates;
• Assign jobs to subordinates, according to supervisor's specifications;
• Act as supervisor in the supervisor's absence;
• Manages contractors onsite - creates scope of work for vendors;
• Read and understand blueprints;
• Ability to review and understand equipment schedules and schematics; and
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education/Experience)

KNOWLEDGE
Demonstrated knowledge of all Maintenance Engineer I and II requirements plus:

• Basic computer operations;
• The basic methods, materials, safety techniques, tools and equipment used in the following trades: carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, locksmith, boiler operation and maintenance;
• Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in cleaning and keeping equipment in good operating condition;
• At least one or more of the following codes: National Electrical Code, the Uniform Building Code, the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the building and mechanical trades; and
• Supervision and training practices.

SKILLS/ABILITIES
Demonstrated ability of all Maintenance Engineer I and II requirements plus:

• Act as lead worker and/or perform maintenance and repair work in the required trades;
• Make accurate labor and material estimates;
• Plan and sketch minor construction and remodeling projects;
• Read, interpret and work from sketches, drawings and blueprints;
• Follow oral and written instructions;
• Keep written and electronic records and make reports;
• Skillfully use and maintain hand and power tools of a variety of building trades;
• Perform arithmetic calculations as required by the job;
• Perform prescribed tasks within assigned time frames;
• Perform heavy physical labor, including lifting 50 pounds or more on some assignments and working in cramped, confined surroundings or on ladders and scaffolding;
• Troubleshoot problems and repair as needed; and
• Work efficiently and calmly in emergency situations.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
PATTERN I

• Five (5) years journey level experience in one (1) or more of the following building, institutional, or plant maintenance areas: carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, locksmith, boiler operation and maintenance.

PATTERN II

• A minimum of two (2) years' experience working as a Stanislaus County Maintenance Engineer II.

EXAMINATION PROCESS
