    Examples Of Duties

    This position performs skilled work on varied maintenance work orders involving the maintenance and repair of plumbing facilities.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    1. Performs journey level work on faucets, toilets, traps, drains, water fountains and other similar devices. This includes utilizing various sized and types of snakes, sewer rodder, listening devices, and locators.

    2. Works on various pumps and pinging including chemical feed, boiler feedwater, condensate, circulating, vacuum pumps, and all associated piping

    3. Performs layout with attention to structural factors, material to be handled, grades, volume, pressure requirements, safety, governing codes, and acceptable trade practices.

    4. Reads blueprints and schematics as required to perform installation and maintenance of plumbing, heating service, fire alarm sprinkler service, swimming pool, etc. Performs commissioning on new mechanical systems.

    5. Performs high work on staging, ladders, scaffolding, and lifts as required; performs strenuous manual labor as required for climbing, overhead works, excavation, and backfilling.

    6. Adjusts and operates pipe cutting, threading machines, pipe benders, sewer jetter, snakes machines, plumbers torches, locators, listening devices, etc. Practices all safety requirements associated with the plumbing and steam fitting trade.

    7. Estimates labor and materials costs from rough work requests and oral instructions.

    8. Operates trucks up to five tons as necessary in the performance of the trade. Directs similar crafts or other trades as required. Maintains records incidental to the preventative maintenance program for all plumbing systems in the District as directed.

    1. Performs related duties as assigned.

    2. Regular, reliable, predictable attendance or physical presence is an essential job requirement and critical to the performance of the work.

    CONDITIONS

    May be required to make emergency repairs at hours other than normally scheduled; exposure to loud noises and machinery with moving parts; may work outdoors in inclement weather and at heights; may work in confined areas; may be exposed to slippery surfaces and various floor and ground types; may be required to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds; must be able to bend, squat, lift, twist, stoop, climb, reach and perform rigorous work activity; regularly wear negative pressure respirator and other safety equipment; required to work safely in the presence of children and other people; travel to District sites required.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience

    High school graduation or equivalent; three years’ experience working in the plumbing, steam fitting, heating trade; Washington State journey level plumber’s license; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the applicant with the desired knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work.

    Licenses/Special Requirements

    Valid Washington State journey level plumber’s license.

    Valid Washington State driver’s license.

    Fingerprints and successful WSP and FBI background clearance/sexual misconduct clearance.

    Allowable Substitution

    Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be evaluated by the Human Resources department for comparability.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Knowledge of plumbing systems and component maintenance, installation and repair.

    Knowledge of plumbing, steam-fitting and boiler theories, principles and application.

    Knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the plumbing, steam fitting, heating trade.

    Knowledge of proper safety precautions and procedures when working around plumbing, team fitting and heating systems and devices.

    Knowledge of federal, state, and local standards and codes relating to plumbing.

    Skill in the operation and maintenance of all tools and equipment of the plumbing, steam fitting, heating trade.

    Skills with computer and applicable software in word processing and spreadsheet.

    Ability to follow technical instructions, to plan, organize, and order materials with little supervision.

    Ability to use appropriate hand and power tools.

    Ability to maintain tools, other equipment, supplies, and work area in a safe and orderly manner.

    Ability to troubleshoot plumbing, steam fitting, heating problems and perform corrective maintenance and repair of plumbing systems and components.

    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

    Ability to bend, squat, lift, twist, stoop, climb, reach and perform rigorous work activity in a variety of environments.

    Ability to demonstrate reasonable, reliable and regular attendance.

    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people in a multi-cultural, diverse socio-economic setting.

    Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
