    Job Description

    The Professional Counselor III under general supervision, is responsible for providing mental health treatment and crisis intervention to Public Safety Professionals throughout the State of Texas, consultation and outreach services to the Texas public safety/first responder community, clinical supervision to practicum/intern trainees, course delivery, and specialized counseling services consistent with area(s) of clinical expertise.

    This position will report to the Program Manager.

    Required Qualifications:
    • Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, other specialty related to job function.
    • Five years post-licensure clinical mental health experience providing therapy.


    Required Licenses/Certifications:
    • Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
    • Mental Health license issued by Texas Behavioral Health Executive Counsel.
    • Texas Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Must maintain licensure for continued employment.


    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Licensed as Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Texas or able to obtain this licensure in Texas within six months of hire if licensed in another state.
    • Experience providing counseling services to public safety/first responder professionals and their families.
    • Experience in assessment and intervention of individuals with serious mental health concerns and/or a history of trauma.
    • Demonstrated program development and coordination skills.
    • Advanced clinical training and experience in specialized areas (e.g., trauma, substance use disorder, etc.)
    • Advanced clinical training, experience and certification in evidence-based therapy modality (e.g., EMDR, DBT, ACT, CBT).
    • Experience providing clinical supervision to master’s level counseling and psychology trainees utilizing a competent approach.
    • Demonstrated record of teaching introductory and/or advanced level courses in areas related to public safety/first responder mental health.


    Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to support training delivery for up to 8-10 hours/day.
    • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. of training equipment and instructional materials.
    • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
    • Ability to travel independently to remote locations by driving and flying on commercial airlines.


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.
    • Knowledge of principles and methods for teaching and instructing adult individuals and groups.
    • Ability to operate a computer, use the Microsoft Office suite, SharePoint, and Adobe Acrobat.
    • Possesses excellent organizational skills, analytical, and the ability to effectively multi-task.
    • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
    • Ability to facilitate course content as necessary.
    • Strong interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to orally comprehend and express information and use inductive and deductive reasoning.

    • Standard office equipment: computer, keyboard, multifunctional printer, telephone.

    • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TEEX regulations and procedures.
    • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and Agency safety requirements.
    • As part of TEEX’s mission of providing training, developing practical solutions, and saving lives; this position could be required, if called upon, to deploy within the State of Texas as directed by this position’s Division Director/HQ Department Head.
    • Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving a personal or TEEX vehicle and/or flying on commercial airlines.
    • This position regularly directs and evaluates the work of others.
    • This position has reasonably anticipated exposure to bloodborne pathogens or other potentially infectious materials.
    • This position is funded from grant and/or contract funding, which is renewed through provisions of the grantor of the contract. Therefore, this position is contingent upon continuation of funding from these grants and/or contracts, as well as satisfactory job performance.


    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Professional Counseling - 60%
    • Provide professional counseling services including intake and clinical assessment, crisis intervention, treatment planning, individual counseling, consultation, and referrals.
    • Maintain documentation of services within the electronic medical records system in an accurate and timely manner.
    • Provide specialized counseling services within area(s) of clinical expertise.
    • Provide triage counselor-on-duty services. Participate in weekly case conferences and informal case consultation to coordinate client care.
    • Participate in continuing education and professional development activities related to the performance of job functions and maintenance of skills in professional specialty area.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.


    Professional and Clinical Supervision - 20%
    • Provide clinical supervision to master’s and doctoral level practicum students/interns as assigned.
    • Provide professional supervision to student worker or graduate assistant, as needed to support the department.
    • Provide consultation and informal supervision to administrative and clinical staff as needed to support the department.


    Consultation and Outreach - 20%
    • Provide clinical consultation and outreach services to identified public safety/first responder organizations related to mental health issues.
    • Participates in additional departmental committees and meetings, division and university committees as assigned.
    • Instruct classes as needed for public safety mental health course deliveries.


    Other Duties:
    • Maintains current list of qualified mental health referrals.
    • Assists with deployment activities with regards to Instructors responding to Disasters while course deliveries are in progress or are about to commence to ensure minimal disruption to deliveries.
    • Performs additional work duties as assigned.
