    Position Duties

    Family Camp at Yosemite located in the Sierras, about 10 miles west of Yosemite National Park. It is a self-contained summer recreational facility run by the City of San José. The camp serves 250 to 300 campers per day. The program is geared for families by providing lodging, meal service, recreational activities, and retail operations.     The Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department is currently seeking to fill (35) temporary, unclassified, seasonal Family Camp Counselor at Yosemite positions.

    Work Schedule: All staff will work five days per week, June 10 - August 20, 2025.

    Compensation: During the summer operating season, staff are paid on a stipend per-diem daily rate, based on the rate for the function of the job and the applicant's experience.

    Room/Board: Housing is available at camp from June 9 - August 20, 2025. (August may be adjusted for school) All staff will live in cabins with electricity, cots and mattresses. Meals are included.

    Staff Information: The 2025 summer season begins on June 9 and runs until August 20, 2025. Staff training is June 9, 2025, through June 14, 2025.

    The date and time for interviews and orientation will be announced at a later date. Selected candidates will receive information about fingerprinting, proper documents and paperwork required to work at camp.

    All staff may be assigned other duties not listed in the description. Duties may overlap into other position descriptions.

    JOB DESCRIPTIONS & REQUIREMENTS

    BUSINESS COORDINATOR - (1 Position) Supervise Administration Staff, Camp Store Staff. Responsible for maintaining financial records, camper arrival packets, and cash handling. Scheduling and supervising your staff during work hours. Keep personnel documentation/records current; ensure all timecards are completed, turn in signed timecards. Maintain sign-out sheets for leaving camp and oversee key sign out. Continue recruitment for all staff and volunteers. Write receipts; maintain proper cash handling procedures and safe documentation. Other duties as assigned. Requirements: Knowledge of Excel, and Word programs. Leadership skills, scheduling, supervising staff, writing receipts, and lodging reservations are essential. A valid CA Driver's License and proof of insurance is required. At least six (6) months of prior experience.

    BUSINESS CLERK - (4 Positions) Primary camper interface. Greet all incoming campers, complete customer check in (wristbands), go through packet (rules and regulations) with customers, complete meal count, give out information (maps, hikes, etc.), answer phone and do announcements. Request maintenance repairs and custodial requests as they arrive to meet the needs of our campers. Other duties as assigned. Requirements: Excellent customer service and organizational skills. Some knowledge of Word and Excel Program and cash handling a plus. A valid CA Driver's License is desirable.

    ASSISTANT COOK - (3 Positions) Direct food service worker in serving and cleanup of food service area and kitchen area. Assist in preparation and cooking 700 plus meals per day and other duties as assigned. Requirements: Experience in large cafeteria, restaurant or accredited cooking school. A valid CA Driver's License is desirable. A ServSafe card is required.

    COOK - (3 Positions) Responsible for planning menu, ordering supplies, scheduling and supervising assistant cooks and food service workers duties. Maintaining records for the kitchen and dining hall. Maintain a healthy, safe and clean cooking/working environment. Responsible for preparing 700 plus meals per day and other duties as assigned. Requirements: At least six (6) months of institutional or restaurant cooking experience or training from an accredited culinary school. A valid Food Handlers Certificate, Proof of current CPR and First Aid Certification along with a valid CA Driver's License is desired.

    CUSTODIAL WORKER - (5 Positions) Responsible for keeping lavatories/showers clean, safe and ready for use. Assist maintenance team as needed. Inventory, order and stock supplies. Do minor plumbing repairs, change lights, clean/change water filters and pressure wash. Deep clean bathrooms once a day. Maintain all restrooms and camp area to a safe and healthy standard. Other duties as assigned. Requirements: A valid CA Driver's License and proof of insurance is desired.

    FACILITY MAINTENANCE /CUSTODIAL COORDINATOR - (1 Position) Supervise Maintenance and Custodial Staff, Responsible for cleaning and maintenance of camp, water treatment plant, monitor water level /usage, and emergency repairs. Scheduling and supervising your staff during work hours. Write work orders. Collect and turn in timecards. Ensure all City vehicles are safe, clean and have adequate gas for the week. Other duties as assigned. Requirements: Knowledge of facilities cleaning, carpentry, plumbing, water treatment, scheduling and supervising. A valid CA driver's license and proof of insurance, plus current CPR and First Aid Certification is required. At least six (6) months of prior experience.

    FOOD SERVICE COORDINATOR - (1 Position) Responsible for planning menu, ordering supplies, scheduling and supervising cooks, assistant cooks and food service workers. Collect and turn in staff timecards, maintaining records for the kitchen and dining hall. Maintain a healthy, safe and clean cooking/working environment. Responsible for preparing 700 plus meals per day and other duties as assigned. Requirements: A valid Food Handlers Certificate, management experience, proof of current CPR and First Aid Certification is desired. Institutional cooking experience. A valid CA Driver's License is desirable. At least six (6) months of prior experience.

    FOOD SERVICE WORKER - (20 Positions) Responsible for set up, serving and cleanup of food service area, dining hall and kitchen areas. Other duties as assigned Requirements: Entry-level position. A valid CA Driver's License is desirable and a ServSafe card is required.

    GUEST SERVICES COORDINATOR - (1 Position) The "Face of Camp," with dual roles of meeting and greeting campers upon arrival to camp and providing important and interesting information about camp and nearby destinations. In additional, will be responsible for the intercommunication between the office and recreation section. Some supervisory responsibilities and reports directly to the Camp Director. Requirements: A valid CA driver's license and proof of insurance is required.

    MAINTENANCE WORKER - (5 Positions) Maintaining the grounds, buildings and restrooms, in working order, repairs as needed under direct supervision of supervisor. Minor repairs in plumbing, electrical and carpentry Garbage run, pest control, poison oak abatement, emergency repairs on an as needed bases and other duties as assigned. Requirements: A valid CA driver's license and proof of insurance is required.

    OPEN WATER LIFEGUARD - (5 Positions) Lifeguard designated area, enforce pool rules, address safety concerns, conduct swim test, attend all trainings, administer first aide, and report to supervisor any safety concerns and other duties as assigned. Requirements: Proof of current Open Water Lifeguard Red Cross Certification, current CPR and First Aid Certification prior to summer season opening. A valid CA Driver's is desirable.

    OPEN WATER LIFEGUARD LEAD - (1 Position) Supervise Lifeguard Staff, lifeguard designated area, enforce pool rules, address safety concerns, conduct swim test, attend all trainings, administer first aide, report to supervisor any safety concerns and other duties as assigned. Requirements: Proof of current Open Water Lifeguard Red Cross Certification, current CPR and First Aid Certification prior to summer season opening. A valid CA Driver's License is desirable. At least six (6) months of prior pool experience and/or open water guard experience.

    RECREATION COORDINATOR - (1 Position) Direct supervision of Recreation staff, Aquatic activities, daily recreational activities, crafts, sports, nature studies, drama and Special Events. Other duties as assigned. Requirements: Six (6) months leading and supervising diversified recreation programs for all age groups in a recreational or camp setting. Experience in childcare a plus. A valid CA Driver's License and proof of insurance. Current CPR and First Aid Certification required.

    RECREATION COUNSELOR - (10 Positions) Responsible for implementing crafts, sports, nature studies, drama and other daily recreational activities. Responsible for providing childcare and other duties as assigned. Requirements: Experience in childcare a plus. A valid CA Driver's License is desirable. Proof of current CPR and First Aid Certification is desirable.

    STORE COORDINATOR - (1 Position) Under direction, supervise store staff, responsible for ordering, stocking, inventory control and cash handling. Schedule and supervise staff during work hours. Responsible for helping campers, ringing sales on a cash register, and stocking shelves. Other duties as assigned. Requirements: Retail experience is a must. Knowledge of cash registers, credit card process, daily, financial reports, scheduling, and supervising staff. A valid CA Driver's License and proof of insurance is required. At least six (6) months of prior experience.

    ENTERTAINMENT COORDINATOR- (1 Position) Under direction, supervise recreation staff working sitewide special entertainment events. Responsible for scheduling and new event creation. Office and clerical experience required.

    STORE WORKER - (4 Positions) Work register, stock shelves, keep store clean, follow all health regulations and cash handling procedures. Report to supervisor any safety concerns. Other duties as assigned. Requirements: Retail experience and knowledge of cash registers. A valid CA Driver's License is desirable.

    CAMP LEAD COUNSELOR - (1 Position) The Family Camp Lead Counselor is responsible for monitoring all stipend staff, daily activities, and programs taking place at Family Camp at Yosemite, including recreation, store, office, guest services, aquatics, dining, and private group rentals. While on site, they will be in charge of creating and distributing the weekly schedule for Activities Staff and leading the weekly Activities meeting. During the summer camp season, the Camp Lead Counselor will assist the Camp Manager, Senior Maintenance Worker, and Recreation Program Specialist with professional level support. While on site, this position will supervise Recreation Camp Staff Leads and their respective teams. Requirement: At least 12 months of experience working in a summer recreational facility or comparable program.

    Proof of current CPR and First Aid Certification.
    Proof of current Open Water Lifeguard Red Cross Certification.
    All candidates must meet the MINIMUM AGE OF 18 PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT, and undergo a required background check, including a criminal history records check, and fingerprinting process as well as provide a medical verification of negative tuberculosis test result.

    Part-time positions(less than 40 hours per week) are required to participate in the City’s PTC 457 Deferred Compensation Plan per Federal regulations. Employees are required to contribute 3.75% of gross earning and the City contributes a matching amount of 3.75%. The funds contributed by the City are 100% vested upon initial deferral and will be held in in a stability of principal investment. This plan is in lieu of social security and does not include any healthcare benefits or contributions.
