    Who We Are:
    The Internal Services Department (ISD) plays a major role in supporting all County of Los Angeles departments and commissions. With an annual budget of over $885 million and 2,162 budgeted positions along with over 5,120 contracted workers of varying professions in facilities management, information technology, environmental, administrative, purchasing and contracting, ISD is the County's trusted partner and provider of choice.

    The Opportunity:
    We are pursuing qualified candidates to fill Electro-Mechanic positions in the Maintenance and Operations Division. The Electro-Mechanic p erforms journey-level work in connection with the installation, modification, maintenance and repair of electrical and electro-mechanical equipment.

    Positions allocable to this class report to an Electro-Mechanic Working Supervisor and perform a broad range of operations including the installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of electrical and electro-mechanical equipment. Incumbents are required to bend, stoop, lift, climb and carry moderately heavy equipment, work in small, dimly lit and wet confined spaces, and may be required to wear personal protective equipment, including self contained breathing devices which may require a person to be clean shaven in the face seal area of the device. Positions assigned to this class are required to drive a County vehicle to and from work sites.

    Essential Job Functions

    Performs field and shop maintenance and repair work on electric time clocks, testing circuits, control boards and switch boxes.

    Installs or relocates electronic and electrical control mechanisms.

    Pulls cable, makes splices and other electrical connections.

    Tests equipment and control devices and makes timing adjustments as required.

    Wires and installs various testing circuits and control board, using electrical blueprints.

    Modifies equipment to facilitate maintenance or for specific users.

    Tests, repairs, and rewires power and control circuits.

    Uses instruments such as ammeters, volt-ohmmeters and oscilloscopes in testing and servicing equipment.

    Performs minor and major mechanical work on engines used to drive generators and pumps.

    Maintains work and supply records.

    Maintains tools and equipment.

    Supervises helpers and sub-journey-level positions.

    Drives vehicles to and from work sites that may include combination truck units with trailers of 6,000 pounds gross vehicle weight or greater.

    Wires, installs, and modifies control circuits used to control the engine portion of a motor/generator set.

    Performs overhaul and maintenance work on diesel engines used to drive generators and pumps.

    Repairs and performs field maintenance on motors of all sizes.

    Installs and performs field and shop maintenance and repair work on County and standalone generators, recording, and telemetering devices.

    Requirements

    TO QUALIFY FOR THE OPTIONS BELOW you must POSSESS and CLEARLY EXPRESS detailed years of experience performing relevant duties and PROVIDE documentation for specified courses related to the requirements below and within your online job application under the "Experience" area and Supplemental Questionnaire.

    Requirements to Qualify: Completion of a recognized electrical mechanic apprentice training program* of at least three years duration -OR- Four years' electrical and mechanical experience in the installation and repair of heavy-duty power-driven engines, mechanical equipment and electrical equipment such as found in diesel, gasoline, propane and natural gas generating plants.

    ** Special Requirement Information:
    * Apprenticeship training programs must be recognized by a national, global, or regional accrediting agency, the California State Department of Education, the California State Department of Labor Division of Apprenticeship Standards, or the Council for Private Post Secondary and Vocational Education.

    **Experience must clearly describe experience in maintenance and overhaul of diesel and gasoline powered engines used to drive generators, pumps, or other type of equipment and in troubleshooting and repairing engines, generators and electrical systems.

    License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions. Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked. A valid California Class B Driver License may be required for appointment to some positions in this class.

    Physical Expectations: 4 - Arduous: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.

    Desirable Qualifications:
    • Knowledge of current and emerging technology in connection with the installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of electrical and electro-mechanical equipment.
    • Experience in the maintenance and overhaul of propane and natural gas-powered engines. • Experience in providing emergency or disaster-related mechanical, electrical and generator services.
    • Experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of A/C and D/C electrical generating equipment.
    • Ability to respond to emergency situations outside of normal working hours.
    • Experience operating a personal computer using Microsoft Word and Excel to create reports.

    Our Assessment Process:
    First, meet our requirements above. After that, our process includes a structured oral interview covering training, experience, and general ability to perform the duties of the position weighted at 100%.

    The passing score for the assessment is 70%. Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on assessment to be added onto the list of eligible candidates on the Eligible List.

    Eligibility Information:

    Special Information:
    Shift - 5/40 work schedule. Appointees may be required to work evenings, nights, weekends, overtime, and holidays.
