    The LA County Board of Supervisors recently declared a local state of emergency for homelessness, and the County is working to revise and expand our response to help all who are affected. We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to help us in the mission of addressing issues like housing, mental health, and substance use.     Los Angeles County Public Works is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Road Maintenance Supervisor vacancies related to the homelessness crisis.

    Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.

    Before the end of your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%.

    Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Road Maintenance Supervisor.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Supervises and directs others in performing PEH operations; will coordinate with partners including CEO-HI, LAHSA, and LASD; and will be responsible for inspecting potential PEH encampments.
    • Assists in the supervision, planning, assigning, directing, and coordinating the work of road maintenance and construction crews engaged in constructing, repairing, patching, and sealing roads; grading, preparing and paving road surfaces; constructing and repairing retaining walls, drainage structures, curbs, and sidewalks; and other road maintenance and construction activities.
    • Inspects roadways to determine repairs required, or cleanup work necessary after fires and storms.
    • Supervises the work of crews engaged in road and street sweeping, culvert and gutter cleaning, and snow removal.
    • Supervises the placement and removal of warning signs and barricades when unsafe driving conditions exist.
    • Prepares daily crew assignments and time rolls, distributes time to jobs, maintains logs on projects in progress, and prepares reports.
    • Participates in the investigation and answering of routine complaints and questions posed by the public and city officials regarding road hazards, maintenance service, and project schedules.
    • Drives an assigned County vehicle to and from various work locations and respond to after-hours emergencies within their geographically designated area of the County.
    • Inspects automotive and power equipment assigned to crews to assure proper and timely servicing and repair, and initiates request for necessary repair work.
    • Orders and schedules deliveries of construction materials.
    • Trains and supervises new employees in the use of tools and equipment, and inspects work projects in progress for compliance with construction safety orders and the observance of safety rules and regulations by the work crew.
    • Utilizes computer hardware and software applications for the preparation of work reports, planning and scheduling work, and inventory purposes.
    • Acts in the absence of the Road Maintenance Superintendent.


    Requirements

    Minimum Requirements: Two years of experience as a lead worker in the capacity of overseeing and working with a crew in the construction, maintenance, or repair of roads at the level of Public Works Crew Leader* or higher.

    You MUST meet the above requirement(s) in order to be appointed to fill any vacancies related to this recruitment.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
    *Experience at the level of a Public Works Crew Leader is defined as: oversee and participate in the work of a crew of workers engaged in the inspection, repair, construction, and maintenance of County and contract city roads, streets and bicycle trails.

    LICENSE:
    A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.

    Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant’s driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

    PHYSICAL CLASS:
    Physical Class III - Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    EXAM CONTENT:
    Before the end of your initial work assignment, the appointing department will evaluate your performance. Those who achieve a passing score on this evaluation will be considered for permanent appointment.
