Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Director Academic Advising Center, the Advising & Coordinator is responsible for managing and providing advising and other student services to a caseload of students in the Full Circle Project that varies by semester, averaging approximately 200-250 students, and collaborating with Admissions and Outreach and Academic Advising to promote student engagement and retention.

Admissions and Outreach coordination involves recruitment of students for university enrollment and representing the University at various educational and community programs, events, and activities. Academic Advising coordination includes providing general education and graduation advising to lower-division and new transfer students. This position with the Full Circle Project serves as a focal point for other staff and faculty involved in this type of work across the campus.

In addition to advising & outreach, this position assists with culturally relevant events/workshops, and shares responsibility for providing lead work direction for up to 10 student assistants and helps manages the day-to-day student service operations of the Full Circle Project.

FLSA: Exempt (Not eligible for overtime compensation)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,083 per month (Anticipated hiring rate is at the minimum of the classification salary range)

Department Information

Academic Advising Center offers mandatory freshman and transfer orientation, mandatory freshman advising, and general education and graduation requirement advising for all students. The center engages students in a developmental process that helps them clarify and implement individual educational plans consistent with their skills, interests, and values.

The Full Circle Project (FCP) is a comprehensive academic support program, created by Sacramento State, in collaboration with The Department of Ethnic Studies and the Asian American Studies Program. FCP supports incoming, first-year, Asian-Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) students transition from high school and community college with the intention of fostering a transformational university experience as prospective graduates of Sacramento State. FCP is nationally recognized as the premier student success program, primarily addressing the diverse needs and interests of Sacramento State’s APIDA, and other high-need, students.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities:

Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.

Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas.

Possession of these knowledge and abilities typically is demonstrated through the Experience requirements below.

Experience:

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Education:

Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Experience
Experience in a higher education setting (e.g., advising, admissions, student programming or development). Experience working with students from various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, including students that may be considered to be “at promise.”
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Ability to independently prioritize, plan and organize work in a fast-paced environment. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to provide direct programs and/or services to a diverse student population. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of students, faculty and the general public Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in a diverse environment. Ability to compile, prepare, write and review reports. Proficiency using standard office software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite). Familiarity working with university-based record/data systems/software (example: PeopleSoft). Ability to understand, interpret and apply moderately complex rules, policies, regulations, and procedures. Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Educational Leadership, College Student Personnel, Educational Counseling, or related field Knowledge of General Education in the California State University system. General knowledge of other related university student services. Ability to work occasional morning, evenings, and weekends.
