    Position Description
    Under general direction, provides career counseling, internship and job search services, and outreach programs to students and alumni; oversees the case management of assigned active employers; assists with career services' events; teaches career decision-making course; markets career services to students, alumni, and faculty/staff.

    Major/Essential Functions
    • Directly supports students assigned to regional clinical campuses (~180) in identifying their interests, values, skills, & personalities, & understand how these factors relate to their academic/career satisfaction & choices.
    • Directly counsels students assigned to regionally clinical campuses & alumni on career options & opportunities.
    • Supports students assigned to regional clinical campuses with career decision making, goal setting, action planning, & identifying internal/external obstacles to obtaining their career goals.
    • Provides in-person career advising support to Phase 2 & 3 students on both regional campuses (Amarillo and Odessa).
    • Conducts career advising programming to meet the career advising needs of Phase 1-Phase 3 medical students & the specialty specific faculty who provide career advising to Phase 1-Phase 3 medical students.
    • Uses standard quantitative & qualitative assessments to help students assigned to regional clinical campuses assess career goals.
    • Provides administrative & career counseling support throughout the residency application process, for Phase 3 students assigned to regional clinical campuses (~80 per year). 1. As directed by each regional clinical campus (Amarillo and Odessa), and in collaboration with the Office of Curriculum, annually organizes and prepares the initial Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) letter drafts for regional clinical campus students. 2. In collaboration with the senior career advisors for each regional clinical campus provides logistical and career counseling support for unmatched regional campus students during the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP).
    • Provides guidance & training to faculty & specialty specific advisors on most up to date career advising resources to meet students' career counseling needs. 1. In collaboration with the SOM senior career advisors and the Lubbock based Career Development Specialist develops and manages resources and guides for faculty level specialty advisors based on the most up to date information to support accurate and appropriate career advising based on students' medical specialty selection and residency application requirements for a given specialty. 2. Specialty specific faculty advising guides need to include (at a minimum): a) SOM Phase 3 degree requirements; b) recommended Phase 3 elective template/schedule based on desired specialty match; c) timeline for taking USMLE Step 2 exam.
    • Uses standard quantitative and qualitative assessments to help students assigned to regional clinical campuses (~180) assess career goals.
    • Researches, evaluates, and updates written and electronic career and educational resources. 1. In collaboration with the SOM senior career advisors and the Lubbock based Career Development Specialist develops online career advising content for Phase 1 - Phase 3 medical students and faculty career advisors. 2. In collaboration with the Lubbock based Career Development Specialist develops, maintains, and curates an online OSA career advising page as a central career advising resource for medical students.


    Required Qualifications
    Bachelor's degree in a related field plus two (2) years related experience.
