    Position Duties

    The Department of Transportation is currently seeking to fill multiple vacancies for the internship position with the Vision Zero Data and Planning and Policy Teams.

    The position will provide support to the Vision Zero Program, which aims to eliminate fatalities and reduce severe injuries caused by traffic collisions. This position will be part of the Vision Zero Data Team and performs several data analyses and evaluations necessary to understand the trends and effectiveness of Vision Zero initiatives. The Vision Zero Data Team is also responsible for the management of crash and injury data, including data entry, conducting safety research projects, developing the Vision Zero action plans, programs and policy.

    Tasks and assignments could include, but are not limited to, assisting with automation of:
    - Traffic collision data entry
    - Data dashboard (creation and maintenance), including but not limited to PowerBI and ArcGIS Storymap
    - Summary of Crash Details by Intersection spreadsheet Report 39 summary
    - Data analysis, using ArcGIS and Python

    The Emerging Mobility Intern for the Planning and Policy team will work on two key transportation projects in East San José: the Bikeshare Expansion Project and the Mobility Equity Project. The intern will focus on promoting transportation justice and addressing the mobility needs of marginalized communities. The intern will assist with community outreach, stakeholder coordination, event planning, and data collection to support the success of both initiatives.

    Responsibilities:
    - Support community engagement, outreach, and partnership-building to ensure residents and students in East San José have access to bikeshare.
    - Support the implementation of the Mobility Wallet pilot program and School Bike Programming by coordinating with community-based organizations, planning engagement activities, and managing data collection and reporting to ensure effective collaboration, program delivery, and informed decision-making.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience:
    Student Intern
    Any combination equivalent to completion of high school and current enrollment in an accredited college or university with a major in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.

    Graduate Student Intern
    Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of a Bachelor's Degree and current enrollment in a Masters degree program from an accredited college or university w ith a major in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
    Licenses and Certificates:
    Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the state of California may be required in performing job duties.

    Other Qualifications

    Availability of up to 20 hours per week is preferred, though actual hours may vary based on business needs. These roles includes up to two days of in-person work at San José City Hall. Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite is required for this position. Additionally, experience with the following skills is highly desirable, but not required as training will be provided: ArcGIS, CAD, mapping tools, and Python.

    Strong applicants will be organized; detail oriented; possess excellent analytical skills; hold strong verbal and written communication skills; be comfortable working with different teams.

    Part-time positions(less than 40 hours per week) are required to participate in the City’s PTC 457 Deferred Compensation Plan per Federal regulations. Employees are required to contribute 3.75% of gross earning and the City contributes a matching amount of 3.75%. The funds contributed by the City are 100% vested upon initial deferral and will be held in in a stability of principal investment. This plan is in lieu of social security and does not include any healthcare benefits or contributions.

    Part-time employees may elect to contribute additional retirement savings through the City’s Voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. Additional Information on both plans can be found on the City’s website.
