    TPWD MISSION

    To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

    PLEASE NOTE:

    READ - IMPORTANT TRANSCRIPT REQUIREMENT:

    A copy of a current college transcript, ISSUED FROM THE REGISTRAR with a signature and/or school watermark, must be attached to the application at time of submission. The transcript must show current GPA, credits, and current enrollment or recent graduation date.

    DEGREE PLANS OR GRADES FROM A STUDENT SELF-SERVICE PORTAL WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Omission of a transcript will be the basis for disqualification.

    International degrees must be accompanied with an evaluation of the comparable academic qualification. There are several associations related to degree evaluations that can be contacted to obtain the required documentation (i.e. Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE) or the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), etc.).

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

    The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Student Internship Program introduces interested college students to career opportunities to gain practical experience and training in natural and cultural resource fields. Under the direct supervision of the District Leader in District 6, this intern position will assist with deer spotlight survey counts, mourning and white wing dove banding, dove field posting, urban dove surveys, alligator spotlight surveys, data entry, equipment maintenance and habitat monitoring to include maintaining vegetation points, taking measurement of duff layer, identifying species, measuring canopy density and vegetation heights, etc.. This position will also assist regional staff with installing and maintaining fire breaks, assist with conducting prescribed fires on wildlife management areas (WMA), private lands and partner lands, maintain fire equipment, assisting with pack test preparation. Assist WMA managers with various land management tasks such as invasive species removal, fencing, sign posting, mowing, etc. Perform required administrative duties commensurate with state employment. Assist with maintaining state buildings, structures, and vehicles. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.

    Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

    Education :

    Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university or recent graduate within the last 6 months.

    Minimum of 18 completed semester credit hours from an accredited college or university at time of application.

    Must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale or "Pass" on a Pass/Fail system.

    Experience :

    None required

    Licensure :

    Must possess a valid state driver's license.

    NOTE : Retention of internship contingent upon maintaining required license.

    Physical :

    Required to pass the NWCG moderate physical fitness level (2 miles with 25lbs in 30 minutes).

    NOTE : Retention of internship contingent upon passing and maintaining this requirement.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

    Education :

    Current undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in accredited college or university in a Wildlife Science or closely related Bachelor's or Master's degree program.

    Experience :

    Experience in safe equipment operation and maintenance (including but not limited to: tractors and associated implements, ATVs/UTVs, four-wheel drive, and off-road vehicles, hauling trailers).

    Licensure :

    National Wildfire Coordination Group (NWCG) Firefighter Type 2 training or willing to obtain training upon acceptance of the position. (Free online training is available to individuals without previous experience https://www.nwcg.gov/positions/fft2/position-qulaification-requirements).

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

    Knowledge of safe equipment operation and maintenance (including but not limited to: tractors and associated implements, trailers, ATVs/UTVs and four-wheel drive vehicles).

    Knowledge of wildlife species in Texas.

    Knowledge of wildlife habitat management.

    Knowledge of prescribed burns.

    Knowledge of field vegetation survey techniques.

    Skill in effective verbal and written communication.

    Skill in effective interaction with others.

    Skill in MS Word, Excel and Outlook.

    Skill in smart phone usage and applications.

    Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.

    Ability to work as a member of a team.

    Ability to travel to various work locations.

    Ability to safely operate four-wheeled drive trucks, ATVs/UTVs, tractors/implements and other vehicles as assigned

    Ability to haul trailers as assigned.

    Ability to safely operate power equipment such as mowers, weed eater, and/or chainsaws as assigned.

    Ability to safely operate non-powered hand-tools, compass, GPS and other equipment as assigned.

    Ability to follow scientific protocols.

    Ability to conduct field work in potentially harsh weather conditions over rough terrain.

    Ability to perform manual labor including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.

    Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

    Ability to wear long pants, boots and proper work attire.

    WORKING CONDITIONS :

    Required to work 40 hours per week.

    Required to work from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

    Required to work on holidays, weekends and hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., as necessary.

    Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.

    May be required to travel 50-75% day travel with some overnight stays. A state vehicle will be available to travel to and from the field. Lodging and food costs for approved overnight travel are reimbursable.

    Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.

    Required to walk and work in soft unstable soils.

    Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures.

    Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
