    The Position

    In either a consultation or an enforcement mode, Industrial Hygienists identify, evaluate, and recommend controls for health hazards in the workplace through conducting inspections, investigations, surveys, research and analysis involving scientific disciplines such as chemistry, physics, engineering, epidemiology, toxicology, physiology, infection control, biomechanical and human factors engineering, and occupational health.

    Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.

    This position is in the Department of Business and Industry, Division of Industrial Relations, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Based in the Las Vegas OSHA office, the Industrial Hygienist 4 will lead a team of Compliance Safety and Health Officers (CSHOs) who conduct unannounced inspections and investigations at worksites covered by the Nevada OSH Act. Industrial Hygienist IVs ensure CSHOs are properly trained to recognize hazards and violations. They provide CSHOs needed guidance during all phases of inspections and during accident investigations, helping to determine possible causal factors (and applicable standards). Industrial Hygienist IVs review inspection reports, identifying errors, providing feedback, and ensuring legal sufficiency.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health, chemistry, physics, biology, toxicology, environmental engineering, or closely related field and three years of professional experience with the principal duty of safety officer in an industrial or construction setting which included conducting inspections or investigations for the purpose of evaluating workplace health and safety; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and five years of experience as described above; OR an equivalent combination of experience and education; OR one year of experience in Nevada State service as an Industrial Hygienist III; Safety Supervisor, Consultation; or Safety Supervisor, Enforcement. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
