    Job Summary

    The City of Grand Prairie is seeking an Intern for our Buyer position to gain hands-on experience in budgeting and finance. Responsibilities include preparing meeting minutes, retrieving and entering financial data in Lawson Financial Software, and creating Excel reports. You'll assist with updating reporting packages and work on special projects to develop key analytical skills.     Essential Job Functions

    The Budget Intern will work closely with Budget staff to help achieve organizational goals. The intern will spend time on activities including, but not limited to:
    • Preparing minutes from budget review meetings.

    • Retrieving financial reports using Lawson Financial Software.

    • Entering financial data into Lawson Financial Software.

    • Preparing monthly financial information and reports.

    • Creating various end-user Excel reports from data extracts.

    • Update reporting package for Budget staff.

    • Special projects as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications

    • Education: Must have a High School Diploma or GED and currently enrolled in an accredited university pursuing a Bachelor's degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
      • Applicants for this position should be a Junior or Senior Undergraduate or Graduate student in the areas of Public Administration, Public Policy, Business Administration, Finance, or related field.

      • Finance, accounting, and/or statistical classes
      • Strong Excel skills (Required)
      • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
      • Ability to prepare accurate and comprehensive meeting minutes
      • Detail oriented, with the ability to problem solve
      • Ability to work independently
      • Capacity to learn proprietary systems quickly
      • Strong organizational, analytical, and time management skills



    For city employees who are regular part time (10-19 hours per week) or seasonal hired placed on City payroll, the following benefits are provided:
    • PARS - Public Agency Retirement System: the employee contributes 6.2% each paycheck to this retirement system and the city provides 1.3%. The employee does not pay into Social Security. All of the employees contributions may be withdrawn upon separating service from the city. The City's contributions will not be paid unless the employee retires under the system.
    • Part time or seasonal employees are not eligible for any paid leave or other benefits.
    • Part time or seasonal employees are limited to working only 1,000 hours per 12-month period, unless the seasonal is project based for a specific period of time which is typically less than 12-months.
