    Description

    High School Students : Assists regular employees in the more routine aspects of their jobs; carries out specific assignments made by supervisors. Duties may vary from routine clerical assignments in an office setting to manual labor assignments in departments involved in maintaining parks, beaches, roads, etc.

    College Students : Provides departments with the opportunity to utilize college students for limited-term service to assist with routine professional, para-professional and technical duties or to assist with special projects or studies. Students are provided with practical experience in fields which may be related to their fields of study.

    PAYROLL TITLE: HCA Student Worker

    SALARY: $21.00/Hour

    AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: Health Care Agency - Various departments

    Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentives depending upon operational needs and certification of skills.
    IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

    Applications are reviewed on a flow basis as departments submit requests, meaning applications will be reviewed as needed.

    You will not be placed on the eligible list until you submit proof of academic/technical college/university class enrollment.Placement on the eligible list does not guarantee that all candidates will be contacted by hiring managers for interviews nor imply that there are immediate openings available for all selected types of Student Worker positions.

    Hiring managers are not obligated to interview every candidate on a list referred to them. Factors to be considered may include education, training, experience and/or work availability.

    A Student Worker may only work for a three (3) year period. During that three (3) year period, a Student Worker may only work a total of 3,120 hours, working no more than 1,040 hours in each year of that three (3) year period.

    NOTE: HCA Student Worker is represented by the Service Employees' International Union (SEIU), and incumbents in this bargaining unit are employed as extra-help and are consequently not eligible for benefits.

    Examples Of Duties

    Duties may include but are not limited to:
    • Assists regular staff of various departments in performing routine professional, para-professional or technical duties.
    • Assists in collecting and analyzing statistical data.
    • Assists in researching information and conducting investigations.
    • Assists in conducting special studies in a variety of occupational fields.
    • May assist in the supervision of clients in various departments.
    • Assists in the preparation and the presentation of oral and/or written reports.


    Typical Qualifications

    EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:

    No experience is required.

    H igh school students must have completed the 10th grade and be pursuing a high school diploma or its equivalent; or individuals employed for a limited term through a subsidized employment program.

    College students must provide proof that they are enrolled in at least nine units of academic/technical college/university courses at the undergraduate level OR at least six units at the graduate level. They may work during the summer upon providing evidence that they carried at least nine units in the previous spring session, are enrolled for at least nine units for the next fall session, OR are enrolled in at least 3 units of summer courses.

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Being willing and able to lift up to 50 lbs. (depending on department)
    • Being willing and able to provide and clear a Live Scan Fingerprinting screening (depending on department)

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Ability to: follow written and oral instructions; identify problems and do research and work out solutions with tact and efficiency; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, superiors and subordinates from a variety of ethnic, economic, and cultural backgrounds; work effectively with adults as well as with youth in performing assigned tasks; and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

    Work may take place in an office, clinic, or hospital setting.
