  • Job Description

    This position performs skilled mechanical work in maintenance and repair of vehicles, heavy equipment, snow equipment and mechanical equipment.

    This position is scheduled to work less than 1 year and up to 1200 hours. Full or part-time hours can be accommodated. This position is not eligible for fringe benefits.

    The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily.Other duties may be required and assigned.
    Performs preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs and services equipment including, but not limited to, trucks, graders, plows, tractors, dozers, excavators, as well as paving, seal-coating, and similar self-propelled equipment.Performs preventative maintenance, repairs and services tools and equipment including, but not limited to, mowers, jack hammers, saws, and power tools.Repairs crushing units and hot mix plant equipment.Repairs equipment using cutting torch, electric welder, and gas welder as required.Changes tires on equipment; Repairs damaged/deflated tires as necessary.Transports equipment to project sites utilizing various trucks and trailers as needed.Maintain records of work orders, labor, and materials used on each job.Maintains cleanliness of shop and working order of shop equipment.Schedules and performs minor repairs to fuel and lubricant handling equipment; researches and keeps informed on oil ratings and new engine lubricant requirements.Communicates with vendors for parts and supplies used for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance.Operates communications equipment between shop and field personnel to communicate and relay information as necessary; receives telephone and radio calls, determines nature of incident or emergency, and notifies appropriate authorities; communicates and relays information to supervisors and field crews.Provide emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed.Prepares and inspects winter maintenance equipment - maintainssnowplowequipment, cutting edges, and spreaders; and cleans equipment post-storm.Performs preventive maintenance on highway equipment, including greasing, changing oil, performing regular thorough cleaning, and minor repairs; maintainssnowplowequipment, cutting edges, and spreaders; and cleans equipment post-storm.Responds to weather situations including snow and ice events, high water, washouts, and others as directed.Responds to unforeseen emergency situations including cargo spills, traffic accidents, blocked roads, pavement buckles, and others as directed.Other duties as assigned.

    • One-year certificate/diploma from accredited technical school in mechanical-related program.
    • Three years’ work experience in repair and rebuilding of construction equipment and machinery, servicing and repairing of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment.
    • Current tire certification.
    • Class A CDL required. Must obtain N endorsement within 6 months from date of hire.
    • Knowledge and experience working with high voltage (110, 220, 440, single and 3-phase).
    • Must furnish own tools up to one inch.
    • ASE certification preferred.
    • Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of a pre-employment drug test.


    • Knowledge of automotive mechanics.
    • Knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding.
    • Knowledge of price trends, grades or quality of materials and equipment, hazards and safety precautions.
    • Knowledge of practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.
    • Skill in operation of tools and equipment.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective preventative maintenance program.
    • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of assigned equipment and machinery.
    • Knowledge of Digger’s Hotline, utility markings and clearances and rules for safe equipment operation in close proximity to underground and overhead utility facilities.
    • Knowledge of construction industry safety rules and ability to utilize Personal Protective Equipment.
    • Knowledge of legal load limits for assigned equipment and vehicles.
    • Ability to safely perform flagging operations in accordance with industry guidelines.
    • Ability to install and maintain traffic control devices in accordance with industry guidelines.
    • Ability to operate assigned machinery and equipment skillfully and safely in close proximity to vehicular traffic, grade and alignment stakes, slopes, trucks, other construction equipment, laborers and utilities.
    • Ability to read and understand grade and alignment stakes set by others.
    • Ability to safely load, unload, and transport equipment to and from job sites.
    • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with the public.
    • Ability to take control of situations in a responsible manner.
    • Ability to work as a member of a team and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
    • Ability to comprehend, retain and apply County, State, and Federal policies and legislation, i.e. local ordinances, procedure manuals, SDS sheets, safety manuals and warning labels.
    • Ability to maintain accurate and complete records and understand and carry out instructions received in writing or verbally.
    • Ability to maintain regular, reliable, prompt and predictable on-site job attendance.
    • Ability to work allocated hours which may include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
    • Ability to lawfully operate designated equipment/vehicles at all times duties are performed.
    • Ability to think quickly, maintain self-control, and adapt to stressful situations.
    • Knowledge of computer software including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications consistent for this position.
    • Ability to perform mathematical calculations required of this position.
    • Ability to perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits with minimal direction and supervision.
    • Ability to understand and effectively carry out verbal and written instructions.
    • Ability to apply sound judgment and discretion in performing duties, resolving problems and interpreting policies and regulations.
    • Ability to communicate detailed and often sensitive information effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
    • Ability to handle sensitive interpersonal situations calmly and tactfully.
    • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with individuals within and outside the organization.
    • Ability to work the allocated hours of the position and respond after hours as needed.
