  • Job Description

    Job Location: This position will be located at the State Capitol Building in Jefferson City, Missouri

    The Joint Committee on Education (JCED) is a bipartisan, bicameral committee responsible for providing the Missouri General Assembly with information, analysis, and recommendations concerning education in Missouri. The JCED conducts annual reviews and analysis of education throughout Missouri to determine necessary recommendations for changes in statutory law as well as departmental policies.

    • Act as liaison with DESE and DHEWD.
    • Participate in workgroups, taskforces, or committees to keep the JCED and the General Assembly apprised of various state-level education initiatives.
    • Conduct intensive studies of potential or existing problems in education in Missouri.
    • Produce reports or research studies on issues in education as directed by JCED.
    • Maintain a thorough knowledge of the legislative process and the procedures involved at each level.
    • Provide policy, practices, and legislative recommendations to the General Assembly and political subdivisions.
    • Prepare and present at JCED’s meetings as requested.
    • Provide public testimony for information purposes in House and Senate committees.
    • Review annual spending by governmental agencies on education.
    • Conduct educational sessions for committee members, other members of the General Assembly, and education providers upon request.
    • Provide notification to JCED on state and local government plans concerning education.
    • Attend conferences, workshops, and seminars on education policy issues that may inform the work of the JCED.
    • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the JCED.


    Bachelor’s Degree required. Salary commensurate with education and experience.

    Job description is subject to change by the Joint Committee on Education.

    Specialized Requirements

    • Knowledge of the principles, practices, systems, processes, methods and legal issues pertaining to education.
    • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, city ordinances and other applicable regulations, policies, standards and requirements, as well as judicial and regulatory body decisions governing or related to the field of education.
    • Maintain member confidentiality, exercise good judgment and discretion, political savvy and expertise.


    Public Contact

    • Effective relationship with public and agency contacts, interacting frequently with officials and employees of state and local government as well as boards and commissions of state and political subdivisions as assigned providing resources and advice concerning education.


    Supervision Exercised

    • Assigns, directs, supervises, and evaluates the work of any Committee staff.


    Organizational Status

    • Under the direct supervision of and responsible to the Committee chair. Accountable to all members of the Missouri General Assembly, in particular the members of the Committee.
