Draft legislation requested by members according to the member’s policy objectives and collaborate with House Research to perform legal research and advise members on proposed language for legislation.
Analyze policy proposals, apply relevant legal principles and court decisions, conduct research, and advise members regarding the legal effect and constitutionality of proposed legislative measures in the context of existing laws and legislative procedure.
Implement the member’s policy preferences through clear, concise, and legally effective legislative language.
Responsible for monitoring legislative activity and developments in public policy.
Assist other House staff offices, as needed, and perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: - Requires a law degree with membership in the Missouri Bar and a demonstrated competence in legal analysis and legal research.
- Attorneys with legal experience and third-year law students or recent graduates with strong academic credentials intending to take the July 2025 Missouri Bar Examination are encouraged to apply. The position is contingent upon the candidate obtaining membership in the Missouri Bar, with start date after the release of bar examination results.
- Applicants must have the ability to remain objective, non-partisan, and professional regarding all legislative matters and work well under pressure with minimal supervision.
- General knowledge of the legislative process and technical expertise in statutory construction and bill drafting are preferred, but not required.
- The ability to communicate effectively, stay organized, meet frequent deadlines, and establish and maintain effective working relationships is required.
- Requires strict confidentiality in professional settings and knowledge of the open records law.
