About the Fremont Police Department
Fremont Police Department is the law enforcement agency for the City of Fremont, California. As of 2025, the department consists of over 300 staff, of which more than 200 are sworn personnel, and more than 100 are professional staff. Fremont Police Department was first established under the direction of Chief Richard E. Condon on July 1, 1958. At that time, it was staffed by one Lieutenant, three Sergeants, two investigators, one juvenile officer, 17 patrol officers, a secretary, and a clerk. By the end of 1958, there were a total of 25 officers serving a population of 29,000 people in the City of Fremont. In 1966, Fremont PD grew to 82 officers, serving a population of 88,000. The department continues to grow as demand for services increased. Today, Fremont Police Department is one of the most reputable police agencies in the State, serving the 4th largest city in the Bay Area.

Police Equipment Room Specialist SpecificationDefinitionUnder general supervision of the Business Services Manager, coordinates the Equipment Room operations within the Police Department; provides lead direction to Equipment Room staff; assigns, reviews and participates in a wide variety of duties involving the inventory control of police equipment, supplies, and fleet.
Class CharacteristicsThis classification is responsible for coordinating and performing duties within the Equipment Room of the Police Department. This class differs from general clerical classes in the focus on modern inventory control and access to law enforcement equipment. Successful performance in this class requires the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment; to learn the department's policies and practices; to demonstrate knowledge of modern inventory control and process improvement; and possess the ability to solve problems using good judgment. Must be able to work holidays and irregular duty assignments for coverage as needed.
Essential Functions• Maintains, suggests and implements improvements to the current inventory control system for the Police Equipment Room.
• Audits equipment inventory, vehicle key control, and other systems for accuracy and accountability. Coordinates daily operations of the Equipment Room which includes, but is not limited to: issues and collects police equipment to Police Department staff (e.g. rifles, batteries, radios, etc.), stocks the Equipment Room with necessary office supplies, performs vehicle trunk audits, prepares first aid and trauma kits for vehicles, signs for deliveries and issues visitor badges to vendors, provides supplies to the Detention Center and Animal Shelter, prepares vehicles for special events (e.g. Shop with a Cop, parades, etc.).
• Coordinates the tow, transportation, cleanup, repair and service of police vehicles. • Periodically required to drive in fulfillment of transporting police vehicles.
• Coordinates radio repairs with Business Services. Coordinates the repair of vehicle/report writing computers with the Information Technology Services Department.
• Schedules the Equipment Room staffing 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Fills in, as needed, for shift coverage.
• Reviews and approves timesheets for accuracy.
• Provides technical and functional supervision to assigned Equipment Room Staff.
• Maintains record of Equipment Room staff training and career development.
• Participates in the hiring of Equipment Room staff.
• Reports first floor building maintenance issues to PD Maintenance.
• Coordinates the charging of fire extinguishers and inspections.
• Builds and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers and other City employees using principles of good customer service.
Marginal Functions• Performs a variety of other duties in support of the Equipment Room operations.
Minimum QualificationsKnowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of: Principles and practices of supervision, training and performance evaluations; modern inventory control methods and techniques; modern office management practices and methods; computer equipment and software applicable to assignment; ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
Skill in: Critical thinking, multitasking, problem solving, conflict resolution, process improvement and customer service including calmly interacting with uncooperative customers.
Ability to: Provide lead direction and training; learn and follow proper weapon handling procedures; maintain secure and safe inventory control for law enforcement equipment; understand and apply department policies and procedures as well as state mandated statutes; multitask, prioritize, and problem solve in a fast-paced and high-stress work environment; work effectively in a highly structured, rank organized environment.
Education/ExperienceAny combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge and skills necessary to satisfactory job performance would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skills would be: Any combination equivalent to completion of High School or GED and two years of progressively responsible, full-time work experience in law enforcement inventory control, property, evidence, or related law enforcement experience.
Licenses/Certificates/Special RequirementsPossession of a Class C California driver's license is required at the time of appointment. Failure to possess or maintain the valid required license shall result in discipline up to and including termination of employment.
