    Definition and Class Characteristics

    Interviews for selected candidates will be held on April 9th.

    Nevada County is seeking an immediate hire of an Agricultural Technician I. This is a temporary position where individuals, with general supervision, make inspections and enforce both provisions of the Food and Agricultural Code and Business and Professions Code. Furthermore, they will normally be working under field guidance of a licensed Agricultural Biologist-Weights and Measures Inspector. More importantly, individuals will perform in areas not requiring certification or in areas where seasonal certificates may be issued by the Department of Food and Agriculture.
    Other vital duties include:
    • Conduct targeted pest surveys, monitor and record pest counts in traps, and collect, identify, and submit specimens suspected to be target pests.
    • Under supervision, prepare, load, and apply appropriate pesticides safely to control noxious weeds and other pests.
    • Assist with inspections of incoming and certain outgoing shipments of plant material for evidence of disease, and prohibited insect and weed pests.
    • Assist with inspection of established colonies of beneficial organisms and distribution of biological control agents throughout the county.
    • Prepares reports of inspections, tests, investigations and other activities.

    An Agricultural Technician (Temporary) is an integral part of Nevada County whose mission is to apply the knowledge of biology to seek practical problems related to the environmental quality, human and animal wellness, and management of pests in production agricultural systems and in residential areas!

    This position is crafted for individuals who have graduated from high school with coursework in agricultural or biological sciences at the high school or college level. If you have skills in accurate and detail record keeping of daily inspections, that's a plus!

    Education and Experience Required

    Equivalent to graduation from high school with coursework in agricultural or biological sciences at the high school or college level.

    Sick Leave:

    Temporary County employees shall accrue at the rate of one (1) hour of sick leave for each thirty (30) hours worked. Temporary County employees can accrue a maximum of 80 hours of sick leave which may be carried over from one fiscal year to the next.

    Medical Benefits:

    Temporary employees whose assignments average 30 hours per week or more are eligible to enroll in County-sponsored medical benefits.

Summer temperatures are typically mild, with average highs near 85 degrees in July. Rain in January typically averages ten inches per year and the highest elevations receive an annual average of 206 inches of snow.

    Scenic trails, alpine lakes, the Yuba River and the Sierra Nevada Mountains all support numerous recreation activities, including skiing, biking, hiking, fishing, kayaking, hunting and backpacking. With a calendar packed with street fairs, festivals, art exhibits, local theater and children’s activities, visitors and locals can experience small-town life without having to forgo indulgence in pleasures more typical of an urban setting. 

     

    Arts and Culture:

    Nevada County is a creative hotspot in the Sierra Nevada, offering an array of experiences, including concerts, film festivals, street fairs, dance performances, poetry readings, studio tours and galleries. The county also has numerous venues for performing arts, many of which are historic settings. The arts have a large economic impact, which has become a vital component to life in Nevada County.
