    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Recreation Specialist will be promoting programs, events, and services to the community, as well as assisting with the coordination and execution of special events. This position includes assisting with coordination of event logistics and execution, developing promotional materials, and utilizing various marketing outreach efforts to promote programs and events to the Los Altos community and beyond. This position may require working evenings, weekends, and holidays to support events.

    Assignment: The Los Altos Parks & Recreation department holds a variety of community events each year. This position is responsible for the creation and distribution of marketing materials across several channels to promote programs and events. Please create a promotional flyer for one of the topics below:
    • Topic #1: The Adult 50+ Program Tea Dance
      • Details: June 7 th 4pm - 6pm. Free at the Los Altos Community Center Grand Oak room
    • Topic #2: Teen Hack-A-Thon
      • Details: June 13 th 6pm - 8pm. Free with registration, Los Altos Community Center Juniper room.

    Examples of Duties

    The following are examples of work that apply to all Recreation Specialist though some work may vary based on assigned program areas.
    • Assists in the preparation, execution, and promotion of community-wide special events, including, but not limited to Family Fun Days, Spring Egg Hunt, Glorious 4 th Independence Day Celebration, Summer Concerts, and more.
    • Develops and implements marketing strategies to promote city of Los Altos Parks & Recreation programs, events, and services through various channels, including social media, flyers, and digital signage.
    • Creates and updates content on the Parks & Recreation department website, ensuring event information, registration links, and content are current and accurate.
    • Provides on-site support for events, including setup and breakdown, event logistics, ensuring event materials and signage are in place, and assist in addressing any issues that arise during the event to ensure a positive experience for attendees.
    • Creates and manages content for the department’s social media platforms, website, and email newsletters to increase program awareness and participation.
    • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

    Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
    • Experience
      • At least 1 year of experience in program area preferably within a public sector or recreational setting.
      • Experience working with the public and in customer service is desirable.
    • Education
      • Graduation from high school, or equivalent, is required.


    KNOWLEDGE OF:

    Principles and practices of event planning, marketing, and promotion; basic graphic design principles and tools used to create promotional materials; social media platforms and strategies for engaging the community; some audio/visual equipment.

    SKILL AND ABILITY TO:

    Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Demonstrate strong organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple projects and priorities simultaneously. Deliver high-quality customer service in a variety of environments and with a positive and professional attitude.
