    Job Summary

    Under the general supervision and direction of the Director of Facilities and Operations, this position works independently in support of BCSM equipment, research, and technical needs, providing services as needed to faculty and departments throughout Bailey College. This position works in collaboration with all college technical and instructional support staff ensuring excellent service college wide. The incumbent is a vital member of educational and research teams and collaborates and supports innovations in research and instruction. The work is significant, high level, and can involve hazardous working conditions, some in remote locales, building and installing new equipment designed and fabricated by the incumbent. The incumbent is expected to take initiative and responsibility for the maintenance, repair, calibration, modification, and installation of electrical/mechanical equipment, electronic instruments, and the computer hardware and software associated with Bailey College instructional and research laboratories. Incumbent must independently analyze situations, formulate action plans, and execute decisions in a timely manner to ensure that the college’s immediate and long-term goals are accomplished.

    Department Summary

    The Bailey College of Science and Mathematics (BCSM) is comprised of eight academic departments including the School of Education, five centers, and the Cal Poly Pier Research Facility. The incumbent is part of the BCSM Design and Fabrication Facility team who collectively are responsible for the design, fabrication, construction, installation, and maintenance of the highly specialized scientific equipment necessary to support the unique research and instructional programs within the College of Science and Mathematics. The BCSM Design and Fabrication Team supports approximately 200 tenured and tenure track faculty, 175 temporary faculty lecturers and teaching associates, and 60 staff and administrators. The incumbent is a vital member of educational and research teams and collaborates and supports innovations in both. This ability requires the incumbent to possess a significant breadth of knowledge regarding scientific equipment design, operation, and maintenance as well as experience with a wide variety of fabrication techniques and materials.

    Key Qualifications
    • Knowledge to design, fabricate, construct, assemble, install, test, calibrate, repair and maintain scientific instruments, mechanical devices and electric and electro-mechanical equipment as well as computer systems. Ability to analyze complex equipment problems, determine repairs needed and perform the repair.
    • Thorough understanding and ability of construction trade techniques with use of Design and Fabrication Facilities equipment, power and hand tools.
    • Knowledge and ability to troubleshoot complex electronic systems and electrical systems. Knowledge of electro-mechanical principles, and computer-controlled instrumentation.
    • Ability to learn and adapt to changing academic and professional needs as well as ever-changing technology and procedures.
    • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
    • Ability to take initiative, make independent decisions, and exercise sound judgment in planning, organizing, coordinating, and performing work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.

    Education and Experience
    • Equivalent to two years of journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area to which assigned such as mechanical, electromechanical, electronics or in the specialized category including construction and fabrication and some precision work or requiring trade or craft skills working with a variety of unique materials.
    • Equivalent to two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related experience in the type of equipment to which assigned as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
    • Equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in the type of equipment repair to which assigned, completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair for one year of the required experience.

    Salary and Benefits

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $62,000 - $86,200 Per Year

    Classification Range: $53,064 - $95,976 Per Year
