    We are excited to hire a Service Mechanic to join our team within the Public Works Department, Solid Waste Collection Division. The purpose of this position is to serve as a skilled technician for maintaining production equipment required to produce products with minimum downtime. Responsibilities include the inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of equipment for the Solid Waste Collection and Recycling Division; performing general building and grounds maintenance work as assigned; preparing maintenance records utilizing an electronic work order system; and performing related technical work as required.

    Projected Hiring Range: $21.20 - $25.44 per hour. Salary is based on qualifications.

    Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of division equipment; ensures prompt response to both routine and emergency maintenance and repair requests; assists in scheduling tasks according to priority.
    • Inspects, services, maintains, troubleshoots, provides preventive maintenance, and/or repairs division equipment and systems, including but not limited to hydraulic systems on compactors, electrical and mechanical systems which includes automation equipment, conveyor belt and baler equipment, heating and air conditioning equipment, plumbing fixtures, water wells and pumps, etc. Ability to drive county vehicles required to perform this essential task.
    • Troubleshoots problems on production lines and takes corrective action within a time manner. Ensures the proper adjustments off all production process relevant parameters.
    • Routinely performs construction, carpentry, welding, fabrications, concrete, painting, and landscaping at Collection and Recycling Centers, Material Processing Facility, and other areas as required.
    • Monitors equipment and part inventory and initiates resupply of necessary parts in a timely and cost-effective manner.
    • Provides documentation of completed work using electronic work order system and keeps supervisor and coworkers informed regarding maintenance and repair status.
    • Operates a county vehicle, automated sorting line, automated bailer, hydraulic compactors, stick welder, MIG welder, skid steer loader, forklift, roll-off truck, mulcher, lawn mowers, weed eaters, HVAC equipment, chain saws, paint sprayer, voltage meter, cutting/welding tools, etc.; uses various hand and power tools; exercises care and safety in the use and maintenance of equipment and tools required to complete assigned tasks.
    • Makes emergency service calls for disabled equipment; responds to after-hours emergency calls.
    • Repairs, sand blasts, welds, and paints all closed top, open top, and recycling boxes.
    • Maintains and repairs security fencing and gates.
    • Assists with special events of the division as directed.
    • Receives and responds to inquiries, requests for assistance and complaints regarding areas of responsibility.
    • Attends training, workshops, meetings, etc. as appropriate to maintain or enhance job knowledge and skills.
    • Performs all duties in compliance with division and County policies and procedures, and standards of quality and safety.
    • Performs related work as assigned.


    About you

    Experience and Education:
    • Associate’s degree or specialized vocational training.
    • Four (4) years of experience in maintenance and repair of equipment to include hydraulic systems, electrical and mechanical systems and automated equipment or related field of or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

    Certifications and Licenses:
    • Valid state Class B (Class A preferred) Commercial driver’s license.
    • CPR and First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain.
    • OSHA 10 Certification or the ability to obtain.
    • Confined Space Certification or the ability to obtain.

    Longevity Allowance
    Full-time regular county employees, elected officials, appointed officials, and judges with ten or more years of full time continuous governmental service are eligible to receive a monthly longevity allowance in addition to their regular compensation. Continuous service transferred from employment with another county, municipality, state or a political entity created by the State may contribute toward eligibility for the longevity allowance. Longevity allowances are paid according to the following schedule.

    Annual Leave
    Probationary and regular full-time county employees that work at least twenty (20) hours per week accrue annual leave with pay. Employees in their new hire six (6) month probationary period shall not be able to use annual leave until they become regular county employees. Employees who are separating from county service shall be paid for all accrued, unused annual leave up to 360 hours provided they give York County as the employer the proper notice as required. Employees in their six (6) month New Hire probationary period who are terminated or separated from employment shall not be paid for accrued annual leave. The maximum amount of annual leave carried into each calendar year is 360 hours.

    Earning Rate for Full-Time Employees
    Full-time employees with less than ten years of continuous service earn at the rate of eight hours of paid annual leave for each month of service during a twelve months period. Full-time employees with at least ten years, but less than twenty years of continuous service will earn at the rate of ten (10) hours of paid annual leave for each month of service during a twelve month period. Full-time employees with twenty or more years of service will earn at the rate of twelve (12) hours of paid annual leave for each month of service during a twelve (12) months period.

    Sick Leave
    Full-time county employees may be entitled to earn sick leave with pay. Employees may accrue up to 1,440 hours of sick leave. Upon termination of employment with the County, employees may not be reimbursed for any unused sick leave. When a paid holiday occurs while an employee is on sick leave with pay, the day may not be charged as sick leave.

    Earning Rate of Sick Leave
    Full time employees will earn eight hours of sick leave per month of service during a twelve month period.

    Training:
    Quality training and educational programs are available at various times for county employees in order to support workforce development that is consistent with organizational objectives. Training topics may include driver training, CPR/first aid, communication, supervisor training, workplace violence, substance abuse, and various computer related classes.
