GENERAL DESCRIPTION Performs journey trades work in the welding and fabrication of various metals. The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform skilled welding work in the fabrication and repair of metal equipment. Welders use acetylene and electrical equipment in the fabricating, heating, welding, cutting, and brazing of ferrous and non-ferrous metals in accordance with standard trade practices. Generally, welding assignments are accomplished by blueprints, sketches, and oral instructions indicating the type of material to be used. Work includes performing mechanical repairs of heavy duty equipment. This position requires the use of independent judgment in selecting the repair methods, equipment, and materials used to accomplish assignments. Incumbents must wear specialized safety equipment such as respirators and protective clothing and equipment in performing duties.
SUPERVISION RECEIVEDWork is performed independently under general supervision of the Equipment Maintenance Superintendent. Work is reviewed upon completion for quality and results obtained.
SUPERVISION EXERCISEDNone generally. May supervise DOC Inmate workers as directed , or as assigned by Superintendent.
Minimum Qualifications/Special RequirementsEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE- Graduation from high school diploma or GED equivalent plus some specialized training in mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field;
- Completion of an approved welding trade school program and welding certification in AWS 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, FCAW, and SMAW preferred.
- Five (5) years of related experience in fabrication and welding using MIG, TIG, SMAW, oxygen/acetylene, and brazing processes; or
- Any combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge and experience to perform the work.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS- Valid Arizona Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Required to possess and maintain a CDL endorsement or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Position requires employee to provide own hand tools.
- Additional technical certifications may be required for some incumbents in this job class.

- Performs a variety of welding tasks in the fabrication of parts and the repair of equipment.
- Lays out and fabricates pipe lines and plate steel.
- Operates various cutting torches and welding equipment.
- Welds and repairs broken water lines.
- Welds and repairs city vehicles and related equipment.
- Travels to project site and takes field measurements.
- Operates precision machine tools to exacting tolerances.
- Performs laboring tasks on a variety of construction and maintenance projects on city streets and sign maintenance when not engaged in welding tasks.
- Operates a variety of light-to-medium duty automotive equipment as required.
- Performs mechanical repairs on automotive equipment as required.
- Repairs and performs light maintenance of buildings, grounds, and/or related facilities as required.
- Fabricates various objects from oral instructions and/or schematics.
- Maintains records and logs of services performed and general vehicle information; opens and closes work orders; and documents work hours and repairs completed.
- Maintains shop facility, cleans work areas, and removes debris; disposes of lubricants and chemicals in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
- Orders and replenishes necessary supplies and equipment. Maintains inventory of supplies.
- Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.
- Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of welding and fabrication.
- Maintains work area in an orderly manner in conjunction with OSHA and environmental regulations for the safe use, storage and disposal of chemicals and supplies and observes proper labeling requirements for mixed chemical solutions according to specifications; practices good housekeeping and cleaning up work area.
- Maintains Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for the chemicals and supplies utilized in the facility and send Risk Management current and updated SDS.
- Communicates and acts in a professional manner with the public, co-workers, and work contacts.
- Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.
- May be required to work early mornings, evenings, or weekends as needed.
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures; follows safety policies and practices, works in a safe manner, and reports unsafe activity and conditions.

- May serve on a variety of employee committees.
KNOWLEDGEConsiderable knowledge of the exotic metals, machines, methods and techniques used in the welding and fabrication of metals and related materials; Techniques, materials and tools of the welding trade (i.e., gas, MIG, and arc welding, and the techniques of brazing and soldering nonferrous metals); The standard tools, materials, motions, and practices of the welding trade; Ferrous and non-ferrous metals in relating to welding and brazing; Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal welding and machine shop activities.
