DescriptionUnder general supervision, monitors wastewater treatment plant processes; performs routine laboratory tests, and a variety of semiskilled and skilled tasks, including making repairs and adjustments to equipment in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant; and performs related duties as assigned.
Representative DutiesThe following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of this class. They are descriptive, not limiting.
Essential Duties: Monitors and maintains plant treatment processes within designated parameters; reads plant equipment gauges, dials, graphs, computer screens, meters, SCADA systems and other instrumentation; Complies with standards and regulations of the California State Water Resources Control Board; Operates, checks and maintains equipment such as pumps, valves, motors, blowers, and electric and mechanical drive units to ensure proper operation; Takes wastewater and biosolids samples; performs daily and weekly laboratory tests and analyses to determine compliance with state and federal regulations and to maintain process control parameters; Alters or adjusts chemical treatment of the plant as necessary; monitors bactis, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels; monitors air rates; Checks gas, flow, and blower meters; Oils, greases and cleans equipment; Performs record keeping functions such as logging plant operations, test results, maintenance work performed, and unusual operating conditions encountered; Operates septage receiving station as needed; Performs routine maintenance and cleaning work on buildings and equipment as assigned; May assist in training new operators in wastewater treatment principles and practices; Responds to after-hour alarms as assigned; Participates in safety and operational training. Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applications will be accepted

- Graduation from high school or GED; AND
- Required experience in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants necessary to obtain a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade II Certificate’ AND
- Possession of a valid Grade II Operator’s Certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board; AND
- Incumbents are required to obtain a Grade III Certificate (or higher), no later than three (3) years after attaining the Grade II Certificate ; AND
- Possession of a valid California Class “C” Driver’s License is required.
Examination (Weighted: 100%) EXAMINATION: ORAL APPRAISAL INTERVIEW (Weighted 100%): Week of April 14, 2025 (Tentative) An appraisal will be made of the applicant's experience, education, training, certification, knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal qualifications for the position. A minimum passing score of 70% is required.
NOTE: Admission to the Examination may be limited to those applicants who demonstrate the best combination of qualifications. Applicants possessing the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed admittance to the Examination. VACATION: Accrual rate is determined by bargaining unit.
1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
14+ years of service: 20 days per year.
VACATION - FIRE SAFETY SHIFT PERSONNEL ONLY:
1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
16+ years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)
HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.
SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.
ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.

RETIREMENT: Benefits are provided by the City's participation in the Public Employee's Retirement System (PERS). 2% @ 62 for new hire Miscellaneous and 2.7% @ 57 for Safety (Fire & Police). Visit the City's Retirement websitefor additional information.
