    Season Dates: Fall Session (8/20/2025-12/6/2025)

    Salary Level: $22.81/hour

    The Player Safety Coach (PSC) serves as the point person for executing the required steps of Heads Up Football (HUF); leads the Tacoma Public School (TPS) District in other important safety initiatives related to football participation; provides the football program leadership and direction toward a better, safer game (via clinics, on-field monitoring and being available to answer questions); mentors coaches, parents and players.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    1. Works in partnership with the building administration and Athletic Director to ensure completion of required High School Coaching Certification Course by all Tacoma Public School football coaches (paid and volunteer) at the assigned schools; commits to raising the standard of safety, play and child care while working with TPS coaches, parents and players; plans and presents preseason coaching clinics and parent meetings on safety and the HUF program for the purpose of providing leadership and direction.

    2. Offers continuing education to coaches, parents and players including but not limited to mentoring of youth coaches, sharing of best practice skills and drills with coaches and teams, parent question and answer sessions; maintains ongoing communication and follow through between coaches, parents and players; observes and monitors in-season practices and games to ensure compliance with and adherence to important health & safety standards for the purpose of leading TPS in safety initiatives and mentoring coaches, parents and players.

    3. Documents the observations from monitoring practices & games via the PSC dashboard software provided by USA Football for the purpose of providing direction toward a better, safer game.

    4. Plans and implements a schedule for each season with the building Athletic Director and the coaches for the issuing of equipment; makes safety checks and minor repairs; marks equipment with assigned school name and identification number for the purpose of serving as the point person.

    5. Distributes equipment and ensures proper fit to all participants as authorized by building Athletic Director; collects equipment issued to athletes at end of season; checks for correct identification numbers; cleans equipment as needed; takes inventory of all equipment; stores equipment in secure and ventilated area; separates and marks unusable equipment for discard; submits a list of athletes who have not returned equipment to the building Athletic director for the purpose of serving as the point person.

    6. Issues equipment to new athletes, as needed; conducts periodic safety checks during season; repairs or replaces damaged equipment, as needed; collects and cleans all game uniforms after completion of games for the purpose of leading TPS in safety issues and providing direction.

    OTHER JOB DUTIES

    1. Completes USA Football High School Certification Course or recertification annually.

    2. Attend a USA Football Player Safety Coach Training clinic; may not have a substitute attend in his/her place.

    3. Attends events as scheduled by the Athletic Director and approved by the Principal or other assigned Administrator.

    4. Updates knowledge by attending clinics, workshops, and maintaining familiarity with current athletic programs; keeps current with regard to rule changes as adopted by WIAA and Tacoma School District

    5. Performs related duties as assigned, on a temporary basis.

    CONDITIONS

    Work with students in outdoor playing fields, indoor and outdoor courts, gymnasium, swimming pool or other sports facility; physical ability to lift and move, sports equipment; may be exposed to infectious diseases and inclement weather.

    Education and Experience

    High School graduation or equivalent; two years of experience coaching football, fitting equipment and/or experience leading safety initiatives; must be at least 21 years of age (WIAA Regulation) or any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work and that meets federal and state requirements.

    Allowable Substitution

    Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be evaluated by the Human Resources department for comparability.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Knowledge of athletic equipment, including regulations pertaining to proper fitting and health and safety risks of faulty equipment.

    Knowledge of school buildings, Tacoma School District, and WIAA policies, regulations, procedures and guidelines.

    Knowledge of effective program best practices.

    Skill to obtain, clarify and exchange information.

    Skill in data entry.

    Ability to properly fit athletic equipment.

    Ability to assess damaged equipment and make repairs or replace as needed.

    Ability to work as part of a team.

    Ability to plan, organize and coordinate activities.

    Ability to operate a computer and learn new software applications.

    Ability to conduct oneself in an ethical and exemplary manner at all times.

    Ability to relate to students with differing athletic equipment needs.

    Ability to demonstrate reasonable, reliable and regular attendance.

    Ability to establish and maintain effective work and student relationships with a variety of people in a multi-cultural, diverse socio-economic setting.

    Ability to set-up and maintain accurate records and files.

    Licenses/Special Requirements

    First Aid Certificate, CPR card and AED training are required.

    Completes and annually maintains USA Football Level I/High School Course certification.
