    What We Offer
    The County of Ventura offers an attractive compensation and benefits package. Aside from our base salary range, an employee within this position will also be eligible for the following:

    • Educational Incentive- An educational incentive of 2.5% for completion of an associate's degree, 3.5% for completion of a bachelor's degree, OR 5% for completion of a graduate's degree.
    • Bilingual Incentive- Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational needs and certification skills.
    • Vacation Accrual- New regular, full-time employees shall accrue approximately 14 days of vacation a year for the first 10,400 hours or 5 years of service; after approximately 5 years of service increasing to 19 days a year; after approximately 11 years increasing to 20 days per year and then increasing 1 day a year through 15 years of service; topping out at 26 days per year after approximately 20 years of service with a maximum accumulation of 440 hours.
    • Vacation Leave Redemption- After 14,560 hours (equivalent to 7 years) of continuous County service the ability to "cash in" or redeem up to 80 hours of vacation accrued in the same year after using 80 hours of vacation in the preceding 12 months.
    • Sick Leave- New regular, full-time employees shall accrue 3.08 hours of sick leave per pay period with an advance at hire of 40.04 hours which will be balanced at the completion of 13 bi-weekly pay periods.
    • Deferred Compensation- Eligible to participate in the County's 401(k) Shared Savings Plan and/or the Section 457 Plan. This position is eligible for up to a 3% match on your 401(k) contributions.
    • Health Plans- You are afforded a flexible credit allowance for purchasing medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from a group of authorized plans. For Plan Year 2025 tier one for employee only is $509 per pay period, tier two for employee plus one is $779 per pay period and tier three for employee plus family is $983 per pay period.
    • Flexible Spending Accounts- Choice of participation in the Flexible Spending Accounts which increase spending power through reimbursement of pre-tax dollars for IRS approved dependent care and health care expenses.
    • Pension Plan- Both the County and employees contribute to the County's Retirement Plan and to Social Security. If eligible, reciprocity may be established with other public retirement systems, such as PERS.
    • Holidays- 12 paid days per year which includes a scheduled floating holiday.

    THE DEPARTMENT
    The County of Ventura Fire Department is committed to excellence, delivered with pride. Our response area includes more than 840,000 people in the unincorporated areas of Ventura County and seven of its cities: Ojai, Port Hueneme, Moorpark, Camarillo, Santa Paula, Simi Valley, and Thousand Oaks.

    Comprised of approximately 658 dedicated personnel, the Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD) is an all-hazard, full-service district. VCFD's services are built around our mission of anticipating and responding to the dynamic public safety needs of our diverse community. This includes prevention and education, response and communication. We proudly provide fire protection, medical aid, rescue, hazardous materials response, and a variety of other services to the public. Formed in 1928 as a special district, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors acts as the Fire Department's Board of Directors.

    THE POSITION
    With general supervision, ensures maintenance and safe operation of the Ventura County Fire Training Center (FTC) including buildings, grounds, and all fire props. Works to acquire training materials such as cars for Auto Extrication and Forceable Entry Prop Materials. Constructs props to provide a realistic scenario for training; and performs other duties as required within the scope of the classification. Maintains inventory of all Training Division apparatus and equipment. Assists with setup and cleanup of Training Center grounds prior to and after training exercises and drills. Assists Training Division with coordination of training ground usage by partner agencies. Ensures all training props and drill grounds are clean, operational, maintained, and have the appropriate materials to function correctly.

    The ideal candidate will have a solid work history in a related field and the ability to apply building maintenance and construction skills in maintaining the Ventura County Training Center. Ability to design and build props used in training exercises, as directed by the Training Division Captains. Must be able to work independently and efficiently, with high quality, as well as possess excellent communication and customer service skills.
    Distinguishing Characteristics: This classification differs from Building Equipment Utility Worker in that incumbents in this classification perform duties requiring the application of trade skills in several trades.

    PAYROLL TITLE : Maintenance Engineer

    AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: Fire Protection District

    Maintenance Engineer is represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), Local 501 and is eligible for overtime compensation.

    The eligible list established for this position may be used to fill existing and future regular, temporary, fixed-term, intermittent and extra-help positions within the Fire Protection District. There is currently one (1) vacancy.

    WRITTEN (ONLINE) EXAMINATION: Week of April 14, 2025

    Examples Of Duties

    Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Performs, oversees, and coordinates maintenance of training facility and fire props. Services and repairs related equipment. Performs preventative maintenance and upkeep on Training Center and Training Grounds;
    • Coordinates setup and cleanup of all training grounds and props for continued effective use during training exercises;
    • Provides upkeep to landscape of the Training Center;
    • Designs and builds training props and ad-hoc requests to support the Training Center;
    • Works with outside vendors to acquire or obtain consumable Training Materials, such as: lumber, metal, concrete, vehicles for auto extrication, forceable entry prop materials, propane, and other general training materials;
    • Ability to transport vehicles, equipment, materials, and logistics to off-site training events;
    • General maintenance and supports of the Training Division light vehicle fleet and heavy equipment;
    • Assists in identifying budget needs of repair, maintenance, and equipment cost items;
    • Performs other related duties as required.


    Typical Qualifications

    These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

    EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:
    Any combination of training and experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment and systems which has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge, skills and abilities ( KSAs).

    The required knowledge, skills and abilities also can be obtained by at least three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in building maintenance involving the repair of minor electrical and mechanical equipment.

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
    • Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver license and an acceptable driving record are required by time of appointment.
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a California Class B driver license within twelve (12) months of employment.
    • Incumbent must be able to sit, stand, walk, kneel crouch, squat, stoop, reach, twist, lift and/or carry heavy objects up to 50 lbs.
    • Availability for shift and on-call work as required.
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
    Knowledge of: basic building and construction trades such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical and maintenance of those trades; service manuals as they relate to facility maintenance; building emergency safety back-up systems.

    Skill to: perform basic carpentry, plumbing, painting and electrical jobs using simple and complex hand tools for repair and construction: including carpentry, welding, and fabricating; construct firefighting props for training.

    Ability to: read, understand, and apply plans, specifications, and maintenance manuals for facility and support equipment; perform basic maintenance on props and other equipment necessary for completion of duties; learn basic firefighting techniques and practices; work effectively with Training Captains to meet the objectives of the training facility.

Candidates must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

    Applicants successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.
