Position DutiesDOT is currently seeking to fill multiple vacancies for the Senior Maintenance Worker position. Under general supervision by a Maintenance Supervisor, employees in the Senior Maintenance Worker positions have important field responsibilities including front-line supervision and leadership of field crews, the prioritization and distribution of work assignments, oversight and responsibility for the safety of the crews, communication with residents at job sites, evaluation of staff performance, and other duties typical of a Senior Maintenance Worker. Senior Maintenance Workers have a considerable amount of direct interaction with the community and general public and are major contributors to DOT’s efforts to provide exceptional service to its customers. Individuals in this classification are required to work alternate work shifts, including grave and swing, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call.
Senior Maintenance Worker key responsibilities: PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE: This position provides direction and supervision to the employees who carry out the day-to-day field operations involved in performing scheduled preventive maintenance and emergency repairs to City streets.
ROADWAY MARKINGS MAINTENANCE: This position tracks, plans, schedules, and assigns work involved in the maintenance of roughly 5.4 million square feet of roadway markings and provides direction and supervision to the employees in this section.
TRAFFIC SIGN MAINTENANCE: This position supervises, provides lead direction, and participates in the provision of signage in new residential and business developments and special sign projects. Projects requiring signage include signal installations, street improvements, neighborhood traffic studies/projects, parking program projects, and other traffic-related capital projects.
SANITARY SEWER & STORM MAINTENANCE: Providing lead direction to, and participating in, a crew responsible for keeping the sanitary lines free of blockage, performing scheduled preventative maintenance at sanitary and storm pump stations, and working towards reducing current backlog of sewer repair projects. Keeping the sanitary lines free of blockage may require the use of high-pressure units, rodding units, and Vactor trucks. As assigned, operates a motorized street sweeper in an assigned district, including driving to assigned routes to clean streets and gutters, and remove dust and litter.
LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE: This position provides direction and supervision to the crews responsible for maintaining the landscape of roadways, backups, and designated locations in the public areas throughout the City.

Minimum QualificationsEDUCATION: Completion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate)
EXPERIENCE: Four (4) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of streets, sewers, parks, street landscaping, or public facilities, including at least one (1) year experience providing lead direction to a crew engaged in semi-skilled and skilled maintenance and repair of parks, facilities and infrastructure, groundskeeping, or landscaping.
ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS: Cumulative “chitted up” experience from a lower class to lead capacity at a level such as Maintenance Worker II, Gardener, Parks Maintenance Repair Worker II, Facility Worker I, or Athletic Stadium Groundskeeper with the City of San José may be substituted on a year-for-year basis (2080 hours = 1 year).
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:
- Possession of a valid driver’s license in the State of California is required.
- As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver’s license with applicable endorsements is required.
- Selected candidates will be required to submit a DMV Release of Driver Record Information form at the time of conditional offer and will be enrolled in the DMV Employer Pull Notice (EPN) Program. Refusal to do so will be considered withdrawing from the recruitment process.
