    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus five (5) years experience in a field related to repair and maintenance of power plant mechanical equipment and machinery

    This position is critical to the reliable operation of the generating units at Sand Hill Energy Center. This position is responsible for overseeing multiple control systems / electrical distribution and various instrumentation throughout the power plant. This position is also responsible for overseeing the continuous emissions monitoring system ( CEMS ) and other regulatory-driven components of the power plant. This supervisor position leads a team of 4 direct reports.

    The work hours for this position will vary depending on business need, and may require overtime hours extending beyond the end of the regularly scheduled work shift and on weekends.

    This position is essential to the City of Austin and may require weekends and overnight hours.

    This has been designated as an Essential Employee position. In the event of a City-designated emergency, Essential Employees provide services that impact the public health, safety, utility services, and welfare of members of the Austin community and other employees and ensure the continuity of essential operations. In such an emergency, Essential Employees may be called back in, may be required to modify their schedule, may be assigned to a City-designated work site, or may be retained on site to assist with operations and recovery.

    The Power plant is a 24/7 operation. Work hours may change according to departmental needs. Work hours may include after core hours of operation, holidays, and weekends.

    • Experience with Woodward Electro-Hydraulic gas control valves
    • Experience with MAXIMO work order tracking, parts ordering, and timesheet processing
    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
    Writes daily, weekly, &/or monthly activity reports. Interprets, explains, enforces city policies & procedures, building codes, specifications, ordinances, etc. Discusses and coordinates activities, division/section operations with others. Attends meetings as section representative. Assists in developing operating procedures and standard maintenance practices. Monitors operation &/or maintenance of plant systems, i.e. electrical, protection, mechanical, etc. Checks equipment for proper operation, safety, and/or needed maintenance. Investigates work-related accidents. Provides technical advice & assistance to field personnel, contractors, etc. Discusses bids with vendors &/or others for services/equipment. Troubleshoots to determine cause of power plant equipment failures. Supervises preventive maintenance activities on plant equipment, i.e. clean, check, test, and calibrate. Supervises calibration of electronic, pneumatic, and hydraulic instruments. Oversees component level board repairs. Oversees maintenance of power plant electrical circuits, motors, generators, breakers, protective relays, and switch gear. Oversees programming/software maintenance on flow computers, analyzers, and recorders. Troubleshoots various plant control systems (i.e. boiler controls, burner management, combustion controls, and continuous emissions monitoring ( CEMS ). Oversees trouble shooting and repairs to computer based and microprocessor based control systems

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
    • Knowledge of the equipment, methods and materials used in repairing and maintaining power plant controls, instrumentation, electrical distribution systems, and power plant facilities.
    • Knowledge of proper safety practices, procedures and regulations applicable to work being performed in or near energized electrical systems.
    • Knowledge of boiler, turbine and generator controls in a power plant environment.
    • Knowledge of electric and electronic schematics/systems.
    • Skill in effective planning and prioritizing of complex construction, maintenance and repair operations.
    • Skill in establishing and maintaining good working relationships with other City employees and the public.
    • Skill in operating precision measurement and calibration equipment.
    • Skill in preparing clear and concise written reports.
    • Skill in working from drawings, blueprints, plans and specifications.
    • Skill in the methods of troubleshooting complete control systems down to malfunctioning components.
    • Skill in directing the work of technicians in maintenance and repair of power plant equipment/systems.
    • Ability to exercise balanced’ judgment in evaluation situations and making decisions.

    City Government
