IntroductionPerforms skilled work in all phases of commercial, and high-profile projects to secure compliance with International Building codes, Ordinances, Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) Specifications, Survey, Zoning Codes, and Design Review Stipulations in Capital Project Management of the Public Works Department.
Anticipated starting salary may be up to mid-point depending on candidate’s experience and internal equity. The full salary range is listed above and mid-point for this positio n is $40.37 p er hour.
Minimum QualificationsEducation and Experience- High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED).
- Three years' construction work experience in one of the four major trades: plumbing, electrical, mechanical, or building construction or a related field of inspection.
- A minimum of two years' inspection experience.
Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements- Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date. The Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles requires that out-of-state driver's licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona.
- A minimum of three International Code Council / International Conference of Building Officials (ICC/ICBO) Certifications in at least three of the four disciplines, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, or building construction is required at time of hire or promotion.
- Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.
Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required of some positions depending on department/section assignment. i.e. OSHA Certification, Barricade Certification, Trench Certification.
Essential FunctionsPerforms duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:
- Inspects industrial and commercial buildings, Natural Area Open Space (NAOS) areas, to ensure compliance with all relevant municipal codes.
- Approves work conforming to regulations; detects code violations and re-inspects to determine compliance.
- Performs specialized inspections at regular intervals to determine compliance with the municipal codes, MAG specifications and contract documents.
- Coordinates final acceptance and requests 'as-builts' at appropriate phases of the project.
- Coordinates and monitors material testing and maintains a file on test results.
- Provides code interpretations and other essential information about building requirements and inspection procedures to contractors and the general public.
- Accesses and enters data or information using a personal computer to research building permits, inspection records and/or zoning files, survey records and enters inspection results.

- Maneuver small or large objects; uses common hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, or wrenches to inspect construction.

- Operate measuring devices, camera, ladder, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
- Travel to/from meetings and various site inspections locations.
- Exposure to environmental conditions including dirt, temperature extremes, unsafe structures, heights, etc.
- Access areas at elevated levels in order to inspect for proper installation and at heights greater than ten feet to make inspections on walls, roofs, attics and crawl spaces.
- Reach, grip and move debris to gain access to or expose construction for inspection.
- Work typically involves some combination of bending, stooping, lifting arms above head, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (50 pounds).
- Walk across trenches and dirt piles.
- Climb ladders, stairs and scaffolding to perform inspections.
