WHAT WILL I DO AS AN ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN I? - Performs technical accounting work, including general accounting, accounts payable and receivable, cost and fund accounting, budget support, auditing, financial reporting, capital asset management, and statement preparation.
- Supports department-wide accounting functions by handling the full accounting cycle, from setting up records and balancing ledgers to making adjustments, closing entries, and generating reports.
- Classifies and records accounting transactions, interprets policies and guidelines, and processes financial activities such as encumbrances, cost allocations, vendor payments, employee reimbursements, cash receipts, and revolving fund reimbursements.
- Ensures accurate financial reporting by apportioning expenditures, recognizing deferred revenues and receivables, settling accrued revenues and expenses, and calculating asset depreciation.
- Prepares financial documents, including journal vouchers, internal vouchers, and cash receipts, to adjust entries for revenue and expenditure allocations.
- Develops statistical, cost, and operational reports, financial statements, budget summaries, and final accounting for construction and other projects.

RequirementsWe are looking for individuals who have:
Completed 12 semester or 1 8 quarter units of accounting, including a course in Advanced Accounting, Cost Accounting, Governmental Accounting, Auditing, or Accounting Information Systems in an accredited college or university.
ANDOne year of accounting clerical experience*
Graduation from an accredited two-year college with an Associate's degree in Accounting or a closely related field
** may be substituted for one year of accounting clerical experience*.
NOTE: Lower-level accounting classes may be taken at a two-year community college if the units are transferable to a four-year college or university.

*Accounting clerical experience is performing accounting clerical work to maintain accounting records within a comprehensive established framework of procedures under general supervision. Graduation from an accredited two-year college with an associate’s degree in accounting or a closely related field** may be substituted for one year of accounting clerical experience.
**"Closely related" refers to fields that focus on core accounting practices, including but not limited to Finance and Auditing. The field must also cover the principles and practices of accounting. For degrees that do not explicitly align with these fields, we will review and confirm whether the degree is closely related on a case-by-case basis. We may evaluate the school and its curriculum to determine whether the degree meets the necessary accounting-related criteria.

TWO (2) parts:
Part I : Multiple choice and/or simulation assessment(s), worth 50%, assessing:

• Quantitative Ability

• Numerical Calculation
Candidates may be invited to participate in both Part I and II. However, only those who achieve a passing score of 70% or higher in Part I will have Part II scored. Part II : Multiple choice and/or simulation assessment(s), worth 50%, assessing:
• Accounts Payable: Purchase Orders, Invoices and Claims, and Expense Vouchers.
• Account Receivable: Invoice Processing, Cheque and Cash Receipts, Aging Report, and Vendor Registrations
• Microsoft Excel 365*: Basic Text and Cell Formatting, Visual Improvements, Using Functions and Formulas, Printing an Excel Workbook, Applying Passwords and Encryption to an Excel Workbook, Conditional Formatting, and Charts and Data Tables
The passing score for each weighted assessment part is 70%.
Multiple choice and/or simulation assessments are not reviewable by candidates per Civil Service Rule 7.19.
Scores cannot be given over the telephone.
Transfer of test components :If you have taken identical components recently for other exams, your responses may be automatically transferred to this examination. This exam contains test components that might be used on future exams, and your responses could be transferred to that exam.
Test preparation :We provide study guides and other test preparation resources to help prepare for employment tests. While the guides may help in preparing for the test, we recommend reviewing all related materials that seem necessary.
