    Essential Job Functions

    Installs, configures, tests, maintains, and repairs audio, video and security systems, and related equipment used for public address, audio and video intercommunications, closed-circuit television (CCTV), panic alarm, access control, intrusion detection, life and safety monitoring, and audio and video teleconferencing.

    Installs, configures, tests, maintains, and repairs closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems including cameras, monitors, matrix switchers, digital video recorders (DVR), and associated software; may receive technical guidance from network systems administrators for devices connected through an internet.

    Installs, tests, maintains, and repairs interior and exterior public address, intercom, monitoring, and call systems, including panic alarms and integrated audio-video-access control systems.

    Configures, tests, maintains, and repairs integrated institutional access control and security monitoring systems which use programmable logic controllers.

    Tests, maintains, and repairs life and safety monitoring systems, coordinating with other crafts and trades as necessary.

    Provides technical support for audio, video, panic alarm, access control, and intrusion detection equipment moves, additions, and changes.

    Installs, configures, tests, maintains, and repairs digital and Internet Protocol (IP) based audio-video teleconferencing systems and related equipment including codecs, automated cameras, video displays, audio mixers and processors, video servers, digital interface controllers and associated software; may receive technical guidance from network systems administrators regarding software and Internet connectivity.

    Installs and removes cables and cabling infrastructure such as wire management systems, patch panels and jacks according to industry and county standards.

    Tests, troubleshoots and repairs equipment interconnection wiring and cabling.

    Confers and consults with vendors and department personnel regarding operational problems, repair, modification, and installation of audio, video and security systems, and related equipment.

    Assists in the technical evaluation of equipment in coordination with engineering and operating personnel, as required.

    Provides audio and video setups for meetings, press conferences, and special events, as required.

    Demonstrates and explains the correct operation of equipment.

    Requisitions and orders parts and supplies as needed.

    Keeps time, material, and service records.

    Operates elevating work platforms such as bucket trucks or scissor lifts for aerial access, as required.

    Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites.

    Requirements

    REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY
    Three years of experience in the installation, configuration, testing, maintenance, and repair of audio, intercom, closed-circuit television, and security systems and related equipment used in commercial, industrial or institutional settings, one year of which must have been at the journey-level.*

    VISION
    Vision and color perception must be adequate to effectively and safely perform essential job-related functions.

    LICENSE
    A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related responsibilities. Candidates offered these positions would need to show proof of a driver license prior to appointment.

    Out-of-state applicants must have a valid license from the state in which they reside at the time of filing. Out-of-state applicants will need to acquire a California Class C Driver License prior to appointment.

    LICENSE INFORMATION: You will be required to acquire a copy of your driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed. A copy of your driving record must be presented at the time of your appointment. License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked. AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS THREE (3) OR MORE MOVING VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST YEAR WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.

    PHYSICAL CLASS
    Physical Class III - Moderate: This class requires that you will stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION :
    * Journey-level experience applies to a person who has completed an apprenticeship program or is an experienced worker, not a trainee, and is fully qualified and able to perform a specific trade without supervision.

    SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
    As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be applied as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait three (3) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.

    EXAMINATION CONTENT

    This examination will consist of two (2) parts:

    PART I

    A written multiple-choice test worth 30% assessing: General Knowledge of Audio, Video, and Security Systems.
    A HANDHELD BATTERY/SOLAR OPERATED NON-TAPED PRODUCING CALCULATOR WILL BE PROVIDED AT THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION. USE OF MEMORY-STORAGE, SCIENTIFIC STATISTICAL, OR FINANCIAL CALCULATORS, CELL PHONES, PERSONAL DIGITAL ASSISTANTS (PDA'S) AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES IS PROHIBITED.

    MULTIPLE-CHOICE TEST IS NOT REVIEWABLE BY APPLICANTS PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

    ONLY APPLICANTS WHO ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON PART I WILL PROCEED TO PART II.

    PART II

    A structured interview worth 70% assessing: Repairing and Troubleshooting Low Voltage Systems, Installation of Low Voltage Systems, Knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers, Working Under Minimal Supervision, Customer Service Skills, Team Orientation, Technical Translation, Prioritizing Work, Active Learning, and Oral Communication.

    APPLICANTS MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON EACH WEIGHTED TEST PART IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

    TESTING ACCOMMODATION

    VETERAN'S CREDIT

    If you served in the miliary and were honorably discharged, you may qualify for Veteran’s Credit. To receive this credit, please include a copy of your DD214 Form issued by the branch of service with your application for review.

    ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION

    The names of applicants receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months from the date of promulgation. Applicants will be processed on an "as received" basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

    The eligible register resulting from this examination will be used to fill vacancies in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Administrative Services Division, Facilities Services Bureau.
    AVAILABLE SHIFTS: Any Shift

    APPOINTEES MUST BE WILLING TO WORK ANY SHIFT, INCLUDING EVENINGS, NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, AND HOLIDAYS.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION
    SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS MUST COMPLETE A DETAILED BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.

    ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY IF HIRED
    The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (Department) has a "zero tolerance" policy for its employees for the following:
    • use of narcotics, controlled substances, and/or prescription drugs without a prescription.

    Any employee found in violation of this policy will be subject to discharge.
