The JobSan Bernardino County is seeking to fill
Land Use Services Engineering Technician IV* positions within the
Building and Safety Division. This position offers an exciting opportunity to perform a variety of technical engineering duties while providing high-quality customer service to the public and supporting key activities in building safety and land development.
Key Responsibilities may include:
- Customer Service & Public Interaction: Address engineering-related inquiries from the public, provide information on regulatory requirements, and assist in reviewing engineering plans.
- Research & Technical Support: Conduct research and provide responses to engineering-related questions to ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards.
- Plan Check & Review: In the Plan Check assignments, function as an assistant project manager, reviewing plans for construction and building projects, and evaluating permit applications for compliance with the Sam Bernardino County codes.
- Verify design conformity with mapped hazard overlays.
- Ensure the submission of all necessary reports and studies.
- Confirm the availability and adequacy of required utilities.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, candidates must undergo a background check, which includes fingerprinting and a medical exam.
Travel: Travel throughout the County may be required. Incumbents must make provisions for transportation.

Minimum RequirementsCandidates MUST meet the Education Requirement AND one (1) of the Experience Options to qualify. EDUCATION REQUIREMENT Fifteen (15) semester or twenty-three (23) quarter completed units from an accredited college or university in civil engineering, engineering construction technology, or closely related field (e.g. math, physics, chemistry). Transcripts MUST be included with your application if a degree has not been conferred.
EXPERIENCE OPTIONS EXPERIENCE OPTION 1 Three (3) years of full-time technical civil engineering or closely related work experience which includes the application of engineering formulas, theories, and practices to design, plan review/plan check, construction, inspection, or repair work pertaining to development and/or improvement plan projects.
EXPERIENCE OPTION 2 Three (3) years of full-time experience as a Senior Land Use Technician in San Bernardino County or in an equivalent position as a lead worker explaining regulations and reviewing development or construction plans for conformance to regulations and development/building codes.
SUBSTIUTION OPTIONS SUBSTITUTION OPTION 1 An additional fifteen (15) semester or twenty-three (23) quarter completed units from an accredited college or university in civil engineering, engineering construction technology, or closely related field (e.g. math, physics, chemistry) may substitution for one (1) year of the required experience.
SUBSTITUTION OPTION 2 Successful completion of the Engineering-in-Training (EIT) examination may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.
SUBSTITUTION OPTION 3 One (1) year of additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education.
NOTE: Qualifying degrees or coursework must be completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education. Degrees or coursework completed outside the U.S. must be accompanied with an evaluation report from a reputable credential evaluation service showing equivalency to degrees or coursework completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education.
Desired QualificationsThe ideal candidate will possess prior experience in project management for construction projects, have excellent customer service skills, and be familiar with San Bernardino County Development Code. Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, engineering construction technology, or a closely related field is highly desirable.
