    The Position

    Public Service Interns receive training and complete a variety of assignments in staff activities directly relating to their major course of study while enrolled in an educational institution.

    Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation.

    Under general direction and supervision of Regional Vocational Rehabilitation leadership and in support of the Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation (VR), the incumbent will learn to plan, organize and deliver vocational rehabilitation counselor services to program applicants and participants; learn the federal, state and agency regulations, policies and guidelines associated with the VR Program; review and analyze case records and reports; shadow and learn to provide preliminary counseling and guidance to VR participants; be a quality and favorable representation of the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) and the State of Nevada Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation in all areas of work and public information dissemination; help to identify and develop resources for the VR program and participants; establish cooperative relationships in the service professional, education and business community to explain VR services, coordinate service delivery and identify available services. ***THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree related to the field of employment and enrollment and continued successful performance in an academic graduate program related to the field of employment at an accredited college or university. Special Notes Employment is not to exceed six months from the date of graduation. Employment in this class will not lead to permanent status in State service. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.     The presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.

    European explorers traveled through Nevada in the early 19th century, but it was not until 1851 that the first settlements were established. An Act of Congress created the Territory of Nevada on March 2, 1861. James W. Nye of New York was appointed Nevada's first Territorial Governor by President Abraham Lincoln later that year. On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.

    Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
