    Starting salary at $ 27.51 /hour ( $ 57,416 / year) plus a competitive total compensation package*!

    This Materials Handler is responsible for receiving and inspecting all materials delivered to and from the Economic Assistance Division of the Human Services Department. They will fill orders, stock supplies, and monitor the distribution of materials to their destination. They will also deliver interdepartmental mail and supplies to HSD buildings via a county vehicle and deliver packages and mail to other sites throughout the county. This Materials Handler may be tasked with using hand carts or other tools to move furniture or office equipment around workspaces and/or from building to building. Additional responsibilities include:
    • Receiving, storing, issuing, shipping, packaging, preparing, and delivering supplies, materials, and equipment
    • Taking spot and periodic inventories to ensure amounts are correct
    • Collecting, sorting, processing, and delivering interdepartmental mail, U.S. Mail, UPS, FedEx, or special shipments
    • Assisting in office moves of furniture, computers, and equipment, including assembly and minor repairs
    • Keeping assigned work areas and county vehicles clean and fueled

    The ideal candidate will possess many of the following:
    • Experience managing inventory and accounting for supplies
    • The ability to work independently to get a wide variety of tasks accomplished
    • Strong communications skills, both orally and in writing, with the ability to work with varying personalities
    • Experience processing a high volume of mail and meeting time-sensitive deadlines
    • Strong time management skills with the ability to shift gears to adjust to the fast-paced work environment
    • Critical thinking skills, with a solution-oriented approach to solving problems
    • Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office

    Minimum Qualifications

    Experience and Education: Possession of the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, six months experience as a mail clerk or performing shipping and receiving duties would provide this opportunity.

    License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level, including special endorsements as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Working knowledge of: the procedures and techniques of receiving, storing, issuing and delivering supplies, material and equipment; postal regulations; the proper operating procedures of materials handling equipment including pallet jacks, hoists, carts and forklifts; of safety rules, regulations and procedures related to receiving and storage activities and equipment; construction, maintenance, and repair of office furnishings; hand tools and power tools used to build and repair furniture and equipment; the clerical and record keeping procedures related to receiving and storage activities and equipment.

    Ability to: follow oral and written directions; coordinate, schedule and prioritize work; accurately and neatly complete forms and records; spot discrepancies between items received and purchase order, packing slip or property record form; perform routine arithmetic calculations; acquire a working knowledge of the materials, supplies and equipment handled by the department; utilize hand and power tools to build and repair furniture and equipment; deal courteously with individuals contacted in the course of work; operate a forklift and other labor saving devices; operate a light vehicle; perform tasks which require physical strength and agility; read, write and speak English at the level required by the duties.

    The selection procedure will consist of the following examination:

    An Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination (weight 100%) will be conducted to evaluate each applicant's application and supplemental questionnaire for satisfaction of minimum qualifications (pass/not pass); and for educational coursework, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities which relate to this position. Each applicant will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

    • Relevance of work history, related experience, and achieved level of education and/or training as described in the application and responses to the supplemental questions.
    Candidates demonstrating possession of the minimum qualifications will be placed on an employment list in order of most qualified to least qualified based on the achieved score received in the Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination which evaluates the education, training, experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, and other qualifications that you demonstrate in your application and/or response to the supplemental questionnaire. Please be aware that resumes and cover letters are not typically evaluated in the Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination. Scores may be adjusted based on such factors as the number of candidates, anticipated vacancies, past practice, and natural breaks in the scores achieved by this group of candidates.
