    Position Description

    The Modern Languages Department at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), invites highly qualified, motivated, and well-organized applicants for a pool of part-time teaching appointments.

    Department Mission Statement

    The mission of the Department of Modern Languages is to enhance the liberal arts education of students through the study of languages, literatures, and cultures as well as through the fostering of participation in diverse ethnic societies at home and abroad, leading to an interdisciplinary and extensive academic preparation so that graduates will contribute to social, educational, and economic amelioration regionally, nationally, and globally.

    Department Goals

    In order to properly develop critical thinking and communication skills indispensable in the fields of communication, education (pre-K to university), government service, national and international business, language interpretation, law, health, social work, and translation, the Department of Modern Languages has the following objectives:
    • Offer the opportunity to learn another language.
    • Develop the four basic skills of second-language acquisition: understanding, speaking, reading, and writing.
    • Foster an appreciation of other cultures, both nationally and globally.
    • Develop an appropriate level of communication, both orally and in writing, regarding the target language.
    • Prepare students to formulate coherent narratives and sound arguments with the appropriate evidence.

    The Position

    The temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions are filled as needed, based on student enrollment and funding. Candidates may need to be available to begin teaching on short notice. The Fall term begins in late August and ends in mid-December; the Spring term begins mid-January and ends in mid-May. Opportunities for teaching during the Summer Sessions may also be available.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications
    • A Master degree in French
    • Appropriate experience related to the subject of the course(s) assigned.
    • Applicants must have experience in teaching adult learners from diverse ages, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Prior teaching experience at the college or university level and who can furnish evidence of strong teaching.
    • A Doctoral degree in the field relevant to the curriculum or related discipline.
    • Experience teaching online

    Employment Requirement

    Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

    In accordance with the California State University (CSU) Out-of-State Employment Policy, the CSU is a state entity whose business operations reside within the State of California and prohibits hiring employees to perform CSU-related work outside of California.

    Salary and Benefit Information

    Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank. As of July 2024, the classification salary ranges for the respective ranks are:

    Lecturer A: $5,507 - $ 6,677
    Lecturer B: $6,221 - $13,224
    Lecturer C: $6,825 - $14,523
    Lecturer D: $8,593 - $15,211

    For international transcripts, a United States Equivalency certification will be required.

    A United States (US) Equivalency certification is required for earned/awarded/conferred foreign terminal degrees, which is from a foreign Academic Institution for foreign studies. The US Equivalency certification is used to validate foreign studies from an academic credential evaluation agency and is evaluated on foreign studies and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from the United States. The certification must translate the information in English, and confirm that your highest terminal degree is US Equivalent to a US terminal degree (i.e., Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctorate’s, Doctor’s of Philosophy).
