    Job Summary

    Reporting to the Associate Director- Building Infrastructure Trades Services, the Supervising Plumber is assigned to the Plumbing Shop within the Maintenance & Operations unit of Facilities Development & Operations and is responsible for supervising and working with one or more groups or crews of skilled journey-level plumbers and their semi-skilled employees in the performance of general plumbing maintenance and repair. Incumbents may also be responsible for overseeing the design and installation of plumbing equipment and systems for new construction and/or major modification projects.

    The Maintenance & Operations provides maintenance and operations services to a university campus spread across multiple sites comprised of +167 acres, 85 buildings, and more than six, million gross square feet. The Plumbing Shop unit is one of seven skilled trades’ shops within Maintenance & Operations and is comprised of a Supervising Plumber, a Lead Plumber, nine Plumbers, and three Facilities Maintenance Mechanic- Plumbing. The Shop reports up, through the Associate Director- Building Infrastructure Trades Service who provides Supervision, oversight, and guidance.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Assemble, install and repair pumps, pipes, fittings, and fixtures; cut, thread and weld pipes
    • Assemble and install valves, pipe fittings and pipes composed of a variety of metals and materials
    • Maintain, troubleshoot and test plumbing systems, including backflow prevention devices
    • Assist in the design of plumbing systems
    • Reads, interprets, and works from plans, drawings, and specifications
    • Inspects completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements, compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations
    • Uses computer for communicating, researching parts and specifications, coordinating, documenting work details, and recording time log
    • Operates power tools, shop and construction equipment typical to the electrical trade
    • Communicates with customers in a professional manner to keep them informed of work efforts
    • Operates utility cart, pick-up truck, welding equipment, scissor lift, forklift, and other equipment, as certified, to access, repair, and transport personnel, equipment and materials
    • Prepares for and plans work including development of material/supply needs lists and ordering supplies through the warehouse and business office so as to pursue the work according to schedule


    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the plumbing trade
    • Ability to perform skilled plumbing work on all applicable equipment and systems
    • Ability to perform applicable welding work
    • Ability to obtain necessary backflow prevention licenses
    • Ability to implement a customer (constituent) service approach, with a commitment to high ethical standards and to present work to a wide variety of audiences
    • Ability to operate all applicable tools and equipment necessary to perform skilled trade work
    • Ability to read, interpret and work from drawings, diagrams, and specifications to fabricate parts
    • Ability to successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for CSU campuses and pass the course exam


    Required Qualifications
    • Must possess those abilities normally acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard plumber’s apprenticeship program
    • Two or more years of experience as a journey-level plumber including one to two years in a lead/supervisory capacity are required
    • Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations


    License

    A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

    Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Must possess effective supervisory practices and techniques and a working knowledge of job design and work sequencing related to construction projects


    Compensation

    Classification: Supervising Plumber
    Anticipated Hiring Range: $9,078/month - $9,698/month
    CSU Salary Range: $7,497/month - $10,921/month
