Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California(USC), and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. Essential Job FunctionsWhat will you do as a Cytology Laboratory Technologist I?
- Performs slide preparation and Rapid On-Site Evaluation during Fine Needle Aspiration procedure to microscopically examines slides to forward the case to pathologist for final diagnosis. Efficiently aspirations procedures and communicate findings with different teams/departments.
- Conducts various filtration procedures to collect, stain, and mount on a slide cellular material from body fluids and prepares cell blocks from sediment acquired from centrifugation of exudates for histologic processing.
- Studies slides microscopically to prepared from varied body sites for abnormal cells, hormonal responses, and various fungi, parasites, bacteria, viral changes, and sperm.
- Troubleshoots specimen problems with providers/nurses/other staff members and communicate efficiently to resolve in a timely manner without delaying patient care.
- Works with biohazardous chemicals using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and in accordance with established procedure protocols.
- Identifies and marks abnormal cells and other atypia found on slides for conclusive diagnosis by a pathologist; reports negative findings without further review except by supervisor on a random-sampling basis.
- Prepares smears and stains or mange the staining of vaginal, cervical, endocervical, endometrial and sputum specimens, bronchial washings, gastric and pleural aspirations, peritoneal fluids, colonic washings and similar materials
- Explains to cytology students, pathology residents and other trainees the accurate procedures for collection of specimens such as gastro-intestinal aspirations of brushings, lung aspirations, buccal smears, and bladder washings.

RequirementsREQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:You MUST meet the following Experience Requirement
at the time of submitting your online application: - Successful completion of a recognized * training program with a curriculum in cytotechnology approved by the California State Department of Health Services ** .
* A recognized program is defined as: A program acceptable to the California State Department of Health Services Laboratory Field Services .
LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
To be taken into account for the role, at the time of hire , you will need to have a Cytotechnologist's certificate issued by the California State Department of Health Services ** .
MUST be current and unrestricted; conditional, provisional, probationary or restricted certificates will not be accepted.
PHYSICAL CLASS II - Light:
This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

OUT OF CLASS INFORMATION:
County employees who wish to meet the requirements using out-of-class experience will be considered for this examination. Those claiming out-of-class experience should describe their out-of-class duties in detail in the Work Experience and Supplemental Questions sections of their application. Applicants are also encouraged to submit any supporting documentation such as out of class/additional responsibility bonuses, verification of experience documents, and performance evaluations in order to assist staff’s review of applicants' qualifications.
No withholds are allowed for this examination.
Additional InformationEXAMINATION CONTENT:This examination will consist of an evaluation of experience and education based upon application information, desirable qualifications and supplemental questionnaire, weighted 100%.
The passing score for the assessment is 70%.
ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION: Applications are processed as they are received and added to the eligible register accordingly.
Candidates who passed the assessment(s) are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months. We will use this list to fill vacancies throughout the Department of Health Services as they occur.
No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months. AVAILABLE SHIFT: Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
