About the Opportunity THE POSITION Under general supervision, perform paraprofessional, technical and complex clerical duties in support of sworn and professional staff in a corrections setting; performs intake and booking of inmates, coordinates court appearances of inmates, maintains stock of laundry, materials and supplies; processes and delivers mail and supplies, maintains custody of inmate property, and performs related duties.
This is the journey level in the Custody Technician series. Incumbents perform a variety of duties in support of the corrections facility involving routing contact with inmates and arrested individuals. This classification is distinguished from Community Services Officer in that the preponderant function of that classification is relieving Deputy Sheriff’s of routine patrol duties. Positions may work any shift in a 24/7 institution.
Unless otherwise provided, this position is part of the Classified Service of the County and is assigned to the Office Worker/Clerical Bargaining Unit for labor relations purposes. Individuals who are in a full-time classification position are required to serve a twelve-month probationary period, which may be extended an additional six months, for a total of eighteen months. Incumbents may also be subject to overtime, standby, callback, weekend, holiday and shift assignments as identified in their MOU (Memorandum of Understanding).
Part-time extra-help is a provisional classification where permanent status may not be obtained. This position is subject to overtime, standby, shift, and callback assignments and will perform related duties as assigned. This position is non-benefited except for participation in a 401a program with Nationwide.

Typical TasksDuties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Interviews arrestees, obtains demographic information, runs criminal history, checks for warrants or holds and enters pertinent information; collects DNA and stores for processing; obtains and logs inmate personal property; ensures inmate is photographed and fingerprinted; ensures inmate booking record is complete;
- Answers phones; monitors visitor lobby, video visits, and arrestee waiting area and alerts Deputies of problems; approves facility access and jail passes for professional visitors, prepares badges and escorts to visitation room; approves or denies visitor applications and directs scheduled family visitors to visitation area;
- Collects property of inmates being released or property being released to family; reviews property inventory sheet and obtains recipient’s signature; for property being released to someone other than inmate verifies inmate’s consent to release;
- Checks inmate request system; resets passwords, answers or forwards requests;
- Processes interoffice mail and packages;
- Reviews upcoming court appearances; verifies in custody inmates and notifies transportation unit; reviews booking for inmates and verifies whether charges will be filed; processes releases based on the letter of no complaint if District Attorney is not going to file;
- Reviews minute order upon return from court for changes in bail or other items; notes sex offender registrant status; notes next appearance in calendar; if ordered for release runs warrant check and if clear provides minute order or letter of no complaint to deputy who will process release;
- Reviews minute order for sentenced inmates; calculates time served including credits; calculates release date; contacts court for questions or discrepancies;
- Collects and sorts interoffice, department and inmate mail; opens and inspects inmate packages and logs items;
- Pulls visitation schedule and staffs the visitation desk for in person and video visits; checks in visitors; monitors and may terminate in person and video visits;
- Checks in Alternative Work Program participants and directs to work location; checks in commitments;
- Inventories inmate clean laundry (clothing and shoes) and orders needed items from laundry; receives clean laundry; folds and stores by item and size;
- Receives inmate property at time of booking; confirms intake deputy inventories; enters in ICJIS, labels and stores items, investigates discrepancies;
- Receives request to release inmate property; ensures inmate has authorized the release; locates and pulls items being released; verifies identity of and obtains signature of person items are released to;
- Maintains a log of abandoned items; attempts to notify inmate or family via mail; arranges for pick up or if no response, bags and disposes of items;
- Receives and stores jury clothing; and
- Maintains inventory of welfare clothing.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education/Experience) Knowledge - Basic organization and functions of a law enforcement agency;

Education and Experience - High school graduate or General Educational Development (GED) equivalency; AND
- One (1) year of general clerical experience which involved public contact. One year of relevant college or business school training may be substituted for one year of experience; OR
- Equivalent to one year as a Community Services Officer, Code Enforcement Officer, or comparable paraprofessional enforcement position.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS In addition to the minimum qualifications, applicant screening will focus on the following desirable qualifications. Please list any of these qualifications you may have within the "Duties" section of the online application.
- A typing certificate, within 4 years, of 35 WPM(net corrected) from any temporary agency or comparable institution. The certificate must be a three to five minute timed test OR verification of data entry ability at a speed of not less than 7,000 strokes per hour (accurate and skillfully).

A typing certification (within four years) from Workforce Development, a temporary staffing agency or a comparable institution is required to be attached to your application to be considered for desirable qualifications. Typing certificates must be on agency letterhead, dated and signed by the issuing agency and have net words per minute listed.
